Wow. That was just a heartbreaker. It's 6 AM where I am now, but I really felt we had a chance against the clips going in. Imagine how smug I felt after the first half.....
I understand that people want to hate on Marbury because he's our team captain and earning the most money, but I have no problem with him continuing to shoot. It's his job, he's proven his ability to shoot out of an off night before and he managed to be the second highest scorer for us tonight despite an awful showing from the field.
That said, he stopped moving the ball effectively in the second half. That's problem #1
Other problems include:
- Love Nate, but we let him take too many shots, especially big shots. I understand he hit the shot against the 76ers, that's great, but last minute shots should be Marbs' or Crawford's time.
- Great game by Curry, but he was the only guy on the whole team to miss free throws. And he missed 7(!) of them. It always amazes me that post players don't spend 25% of their time on free throws. On the other hand, we should have been pounding the ball down to him in the 3rd when our offense stagnated.
- Complete ball movement death in the second half. Especially sad because it was so pretty in the first half.
- Brown's Rubik's Cube substitutions. Penny got WAY too many minutes. I understand we need to showcase the guy for a trade, but he was on for far too long and became enormous deadweight putting up pointless jumpers. Brown used him brilliantly in the first half (2nd quarter, mostly) to beat up Cassell in the post, but then he decided to keep him in and Penny got excited just by seeing significant PT. Bad game after his initial outburst.
- More on subs: Where was Frye?? Butler? Ariza? Why didn't Mo Taylor see more time when he was one of the most effective support guys on the court? The Frye thing is what makes me especially annoyed, though, he's not an energy guy, but he provides scoring, smart play and efficiency and we desperately needed all those things in the second when everything just stalled out.
I've grown up with Knicks that, regardless of the coach or players, were absolute nightmares in the 4th. Even when the teams were good, 4th quarters often seemed to be roller-coaster rides. This game gave me flashbacks.
So much to like. So much to hate.
G'night.
