Police capture robbery suspects
Car crashes 5 times in chase after man is slain in holdup

By David Heinzmann
Tribune staff reporter
Published December 6, 2005

Three men robbed a father and son, fatally shot one of the two four times and then led police on a chase through Roseland, Beverly and other parts of the South and Southwest Sides Monday before crashing into a nursing home, police said.

After crashing into the front steps of the Renaissance nursing home at 2940 W. 87th St., three men fled on foot. Police caught and arrested them a few blocks away, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

All three were in custody and awaiting charges. The victim who was shot was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead at 5:39 p.m., a Cook County medical examiner's spokesman said. The victim was identified as Lee Richardson, 31, of the 11400 block of South Parnell Avenue.

A Dodge Caravan minivan pulled up at 114th Street and Parnell Avenue just before noon Monday and the three men pulled guns on the father and son as they were walking on the street, Bond said. They took a wallet, shot Richardson, and fled in the van.

The victims "were just walking down the street, minding their own business," Bond said.

Tactical officers, who heard a radio report from a 911 call, arrived minutes later and started chasing the van. The van sped across the Southwest Side, crashing at five locations--94th Street and Hoyne Avenue, Hoyne and 95th Street, 87th Street and Western Avenue, and then two times in the 2900 block of West 87th, Bond said. No one was injured in the accidents, she said.

After the van crashed into the nursing home steps, the three men got out and ran north. Police officers caught them a few blocks away on Seipp Street.

One of the officers broke his ankle in the scuffle, and one of the suspects suffered a broken leg. Charges were pending Monday night, and police did not identify the men.

Inside the van, investigators found several items that might have been stolen in previous robberies, Bond said, but it was not clear how recently they might have been taken.

What a tragedy. This reminds me of when Jordan lost his dad in a car-jacking. Events like this make you question any sort of logic to life.

there is none... trust me. You live life to the fullest and remember love and family are the most important things.

Ive seen enough tough stuff to know that "everything happens for a reason" and "god works in mysterious ways" are the two biggest loads of crap ever uttered by human lips.

31 years old... anyone know if he had a wife or kids?

yeah. Religion is the opiate of the masses, but some people NEED something to hold onto.
I am not one of those people.

Opiates numb the pain, that's why religion or some higher values are necessary and that's why that quote wasn't meant to be derogatory of religion. Without any higher values life is meaningless suffering and unbearable.

It's happened to his family twice now. I wonder why he didn't move his family out of Chicago a long time ago. Regardless, it's a terrible thing to have happen.

The news report said that the father has moved to the suburbs but Lee Jr. decided to stay... Horrible stuff but if there is one guy who can handle and get his family through this tragedy it's Q.

Q will pull through it, but right now with his family is where he needs to be.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

It's too early to say that. Q was playing hurt. Also, Q was a decent player before coming here. Thomas had a history of being an under achiever. I'm not saying Q's going to be great, but he'll be a decent player for us.

I hope he doesnt rush back. Something like this is going to kill any concentration he may have had. I would give him a month. Hopefully Isiah and co go out there and tell him to take all the time he needs
