NR can have a good long career in the NBA if he learns how to play on the ground. That is, if he does not have to jump 3+ feet off the ground every time he goes to the hoop etc.

It sure is entertaining to watch NR go up and sky with a guy a foot taller, but the thing is, jumping like that game after game is murder on a body, and it will eventually take its toll physically.

NR needs to notice what Iverson has done. AI is the most recent little man to play in the air with the big men. After a couple of seasons, even Iverson brought his game out of the sky for most plays, reserving the super athleticism for when he must use it.

NR needs to study the great little men, Murphy, Boykins, Bogues, and Iverson too.

If not his career will have many spectacular plays, but very likely will be short too.

Good post.

I think as soon as Nate gets his first in game dunk that counts he will calm down.

Herb Williams told channing Frye something like go full speed but instead of going 150 miles per hour do 85....he should tell Nate that.

he's going to have a short career. Thats life at 5'9 in the NBA. Like Mugsey or Spud once he hits 31-32 and slows down a hair he's going to lose a lot of his effectiveness.

His game is all speed physical play.

I think if NR doesn't develop a ground game he'll be lucky to make it to 30 in the NBA.

I think Nate either will learn how to 'play'- i.e., be a pg, get in the lane and pass, etc- or he won't make it past 3 seasons with us. Once he learns to play, he will stop jumping up into the air every time he gets into the lane cause he'll have a better idea what he is going to do with the ball- right now, its leap first, think on the way down

Nate already had his first dunk! I just saw it on NBA TV. I must have been in the bathroom or something cuz I totally missed that. It looked pretty dramatic. I bet the knicks were down 30 st the time'lol

AI got that crazy wingspan that makes him taller. Nate looks kinda stumpy in the limbs. Mugsy compared him to Calvin Murphy.

Nate loses some hop, or speed he is toast. This guy should not be given huge money.

Why would Nate lose speed? Has AI, Steve Nash or Earl Boykins lost speed? He'll be fine he has a nice set of Gorilla NUTZ

Injury. I think AI and Nash are smarter players now.

AI has other natural abiilty. Nash has mad refined skills. Boykins relies on his quickness. Nate on his athletic ability. When mugsy lost his speed due to knee issues he was done. Height does matter. H20 got by on length and fundamentals got example.

He's also heavily muscled and carrying more weight than he should for his size. That will take it's toll on his legs which will rob him of his speed. Just like it did to Muggsy as Nalod pointed out.

Height does matter, but at the end of Mugsys career, he was still effective b/c he played good scrappy defense and was able to hit those open shots and set up his teammates, and this is why Nate needs to learn the PG duties, cause someday he's not going to have that 48" verticle. I mean it would be great if he did, but lets see the type of progress he makes and if he becomes an intelligent player.

Aside from height, or lack thereof Muggsy and Nate have nothing in common. Muggsy was a pure PG coming into the NBA. Even Nate admits that he's not a PG.

Nate's developing in a weird way. He's been a lot more useful this week than he was last week. If he ever learns to pass, he can be a really good player.

Did mugsy bogues ever jump 48 inches off the ground? These are interesting and silly posts. How are you all going to project when his body breaks down? This is ludacris!

Booman, we aren't trying to dis NR. Evey NBA player breaks down with time, it is a young man's game. That is why we celebrate Kevin Willis! Guards especially break down quicker because of greater stress to the knees and ankles.

It is not ludacris to predict that a player who relies so heavily on his athletic ability will face injury. Nor is it unreasonable to say that NR needs to develop his game to extend his longevity. This game is hard on guys who are 6'3", let alone 5'9".

Also, I also understand the Mugsy Bogues could dunk, even though I never saw it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=safari&rls=en&q=mugsy+bogues+dunk&btnG=Search

I'm just saying how is this relevant to what's going on right now. We are talking about something that will happen like 8 to 10 years down the road. Enjoy Nate for what he is and that is Great.

10 YEARS is a long NBA career.

The average career of a NUMBER ONE overall draft pick is 722 games - that's the draft position with the longest average career. (according to a study done in 2003).

Mugsy played 889 games.

Spud played in 814 games also a long career.

Calvin Murphy played 1002 games.

Allen Iverson has already played over 600.

You're right, 10 years is a good long career, especially for a guard. My interest in NR learning how to play on the ground is not just longevity, but I think it would make him into a far more effective player.

He could to bust out the Pookie Wennington game tapes and watch how he did it!
