The flipside to this whole arguement is if Curry was coming out of College this year he would be a senior KILLING guys in college. Where would he go in the draft? Top 3? The Knicks traded Sweets for a top three and a swap down the road.
I was just thinking the same thing, but there are 2 arguement here I think. One is the value of Curry and 2 is the deal that got him.
Lets just say Curry was a senior at UConn. Now he missed last year's tourney because of a heart flutter but since has been cleared to play. He's 22. He was a monster last year but didnt enter the draft because of his health, so he comes back for his senior year. So far he's averaging 25/12/4 blocks and shooting 62% from the field. Yea, Rudy Gay, Aldgridge or Morrison are nice but Curry is a 6'11 center with wingspan over 7'6 and a pure post player.
Now is this guy, who is a shoe in for #1 worth Mike Sweetney, an unprotected pick, 2 second rounders and a draft position swap the following year? I would say hands down yes. And I would say almost all would agree. Guys like that come around only every couple of years and your chance of drafting one is even tougher.
On that side: good trade.
Flip side is the stuff Briggs was talking about. Now he's wrong about one thing. The Lakers did offer a package for Curry. I honestly forget the players involved but Kupchick said it was a much better deal than what the Knicks offered. The difference was the Lakers were only offering a 2 year deal w/ a 3rd year option. Something like 2 years $20/mm
Now Curry's agent killed that one because we were willing to offer him 5 years. Could we have done a better job in terms of the draft comp we game them? Probably. Its pretty obvious trades arent Isiah's strong point, as he usually overpays. Overall the deal IS costly and a high risk but its one that makes sense considering our position. The Knicks are in win now mode and needed a presense up front. Thats why they got Larry Brown. Thats why they were willing take the huge risks they did to get Curry.
