1) For all the talk prior to the game about how Steph hated Larry Brown and wanted to get out of town (mostly being talked about in the NY Post), he played like he was enjoying life yesterday, finishing with 27 points and 8 assists in an 11 point win, 103-92. He and Sebastian were going back-and-forth pretty hard, and Bassie finished with 27, 7 and 6 boards. He looked to be on pace for a triple-double, but the game slowed in the fourth and Bassy wasn't able to cause as much havoc with his quickness.
2) Not sure what Larry Brown's offense calls for exactly, but a big part of it appears to be having Malik Rose shoot repeated baseline jumpers. He somehow gets open on almost every play, but he's not exactly known for his midrange jumper.
3) And if the Knicks are going to run an offense that calls for repeated midrange jumpers, it's too bad they don't have a guy who is an amazing midrange jump shooter...LIKE KURT THOMAS!
4) Bassy is wearing the black/red T-Mac 5's.
5) The Knicks City Dancers took the floor and performed their first routine to INXS's "New Sensation," which was a new sensation in about 1991. They later come out and do the old "fire the t-shirts into the crowd" thing, which is bothersome, but made even more bothersome by the way the girls dance around while they throw the shirts.
6) I was telling Ryan that I went to Kid's Day at the Rangers game the other day, and Ryan had perhaps his greatest idea ever: They should have Adults-Only Night one game. I think the selling points would include: Tip-Off at midnight; No kids allowed; All the music has profanities; All the drinks are doubles; Ushers can give you change in singles; Instead of team dancers, you get strippers.
You want to sell out that Hawks/Raptors game in Atlanta? Call the Blue Flame and get the girls over to Philips Arena!
7) Highlight of the game for me was late in the third when the Knicks came down and set up the offense and the in-arena music guy played part of "Back Then" by Mike Jones. First Mike Jones I've heard this season at The Garden. And I think if I was a player, I'd be way too into the music they play.
8) During a timeout they show a thing on the scoreboard with Knicks players reading lines from movies, and then have fans guess which movie they're reading from. It begins with Mo Taylor reading a line from Ray, and doing a pretty good job of sounding like Jamie Foxx. Then Steph appears on the screen and goes, "Mama always told me, life is like a box of chocolates." He even tries to give it that Gump-intonation.
9) I've talked about enjoying the Blazers play, but they were a little off yesterday. Bassy was still doing his thing, getting to the rim pretty much at will, but Ghostface Pryzbilla had a bad game (finished with 5 points and 2 boards), and the Blazers weren't able to take advantage of a hot Zach Randolph (he went 8-for-13 but didn't get nearly enough touches). They're going to be a contender in two years, if all these guys keep developing.
10) Postgame: Nate McMillan kept the Blazers locker room closed well past the NBA-allotted 10 minute time limit. NBA Player's Association president Billy Hunter made an appearance in the Knicks locker room, walking with a cane and a pronounced limp. Malik Rose said, "The CBA negotiations weren't that bad, were they?"
When reporters asked Eddy Curry about his sore calf, and he said, "I have been trying to play through it, but it hurt a little bit." Sitting two lockers down, Matt Barnes leaned over and cracked, "Must be your 15-pound head."
Most fun thing postgame was a running battle between Nate Robinson and Curry. They'd apparently hidden various parts of each other's clothes. Curry couldn't find a pair of his shoes, and someone tipped him off that they were in the bottom of a laundry bag filled with the game worn jerseys and shorts. Yuck. Curry picked up the bag and kind of kicked at it, not wanting to reach down inside the moist sack. A Knicks equipment manager opened the bag and looked around in there but didn't see any shoes.
Curry was starting to get a little angry, and Robinson joked, "Go ahead, tell coach, tattletail. Snitches get snitched!" Everyone cracked up.
Curry finally found his shoes atop Stephon Marbury's locker. Robinson pointed out that he couldn't put them there because he couldn't even reach up there. A few minutes later, Robinson was slipping on white Nike socks, because he still couldn't find his dress socks. As he grabbed his duffel bag, his shirt came untucked, because he was beltless, too. Luckily, he could probably swing by the young men's department at Sears for replacements.
On the other side of the locker room, Mo Taylor was calling Antonio Davis "Luther," apparently because of AD's shower singing. David Lee and Steph were cracking up about a mistake Lee made on the floor, something about Lee speaking before he thought, he said. And for the first time in five years, it was fun to be in the Knicks' locker room. They may be under fire in the papers and from the media, specifically the people who've probably never even seen them play in person, but this is a different Knicks team.
Just give them some time. Some people are really critical of everything the knicks do but, I feel as if we have a good young team. And this guy basically sums it up with what I feel the only thing this team needs and that is time. Forget all the krazy trades and signings I want this team to stick together until they fail at making the playoffs.
