- it's only been 9 games. and we were on a WEST COAST TRIP no less. we're a younger team. we have a new coach and trying to learn a new system. you'd figure that this team would get some slack b/c of this but they haven't b/c it's a sexy story. and steph fell into the trap by opening his mouth. and now things are starting to spiral out of control. LB looked PISSED last night in the post game. that wasn't mind games there, it was venting in a way.
- imho, that was the WORST game we played all year. i can't remember running more than a handful of effective offensive sets the ENTIRE game. our defense was sort of suspect and we were just a mess out there. all i look for is progress as each game comes and goes. i want to see something new that they are learning. but yesterday just taught us the same thing, the youngs guys are the future and are pushing the older guys out with their play.
- mitch lawrence said this about steph: "But he's got to go. The Brown program, which continued last night with another loss against the Nuggets, isn't going to make any progress if Marbury continues to buck his coach's system. If anything, his continued presence will prevent the team from going forward." is he right?
ok, back to the original question:
should LB adapt to the players he has...or should he implement a system and find players tha fit it?
obiously what's going on here is that LB has a system and he's making the players here try to fit it. his track record is proven so it's tough to argue with him but by not really bending, he's underutilizing or misutilizing some skillsets from certain players (up to this point), and in this case, we're really talking about steph.
this kind of reminds me of that lakers team with phil - payton, malone, bryant, and shaq. that team won b/c everyone is a hall of famer but they lost in the finals and one of the reasons why is that after malone went down, he still didn't alter his game plan up to incorporate gary payton, who was stuck running the triangle. payton was putting up impressive #'s as recent as the season before he got to LA yet was totally revamped for the triangle...and not in a good way.
lb has taken ALOT away from steph at the behest of making him a better point guard. and it IS costing us wins right now.
i understand it's a marathon and we're really not talking about this year, but the next 2 after this one. so we have to take our lumps now. but it's amazing how marbury can claim himself as the "best pg" yet asked to be moved to sg as soon as lb got there. is he intimidated running lb's system after experiencing it for a few weeks in athens? i don't know.
but i ask you guys this...should lb bend his ways for the skillset he has in his players OR does he implement a system and find players that fit it?

Just like he wanted the team to focus on defense and rebounds first, before offense, he wants Steph to work on running the offense ad distributing first, before looking for his shot.
Its just a matter of games and practice, before things start clicking. He is already distributing the ball very well, its just a matter of collectively better D, collectively cutting down on turnovers, setting a rotation, and steph picking his spots.
No one can convinve me that by January this wont all be clicking. I believe in the talent on our squad, and I believe in Larry Brown, and nothing I have seen has made me stop believing. I do not believe in the papers or the drama.

I think Steph is over compensating. Larry has given him license to shoot 20 shots a game and Steph is taking 12. Steph is only taking 60% of his allotment. Why? Because Brown said he wanted them to be good shots and Steph is afraid to be criticized and coached?
Did you see Nate's demeanor when LB was in his face on the bench? he looked positive and receptive and he patted himself on the chest saying "okay, my bad". That's what LB wants, that's why he keeps talking about how hard the kids practice and how much they're trying to learn. Larry is a teacher, he wants receptive students, he doesn't want to have to hit guys over the head with a pipe.
I can't speak for Larry, but I know what bothers me about Steph is he plays with two different levels of intensity, and the better of it is when he's looking to score. I can tell you exactly when he's going to shoot just by his peppy footwork and body language on the perimeter. Steph is not yet able to integrate his scoring and distributing selves, and in distribution mode he plays flaccid and is an easy read.
Not only that but Steph hangs his head way to soon in the face of adversity, and if it's not by taking over the game with his personal scoring he really doesn't know how to mount an aggressive assault. By the end of the third Steph looked confused, tired and beaten.
Now it's said that we're only 9 games into the season so we should be mild in our judgments. I agree. But shouldn't that pertain to our judgments of Brown and his methods? And isn't it a little early for Steph to be giving up on the program?
It's true, this isn't ALL Steph's fault, but once again Steph finds himself at the center of turmoil, like a recurring theme to his career, and I'm afraid that like last year, this team could divide and fracture around him, with continued gutless and passionless play as the result. Steph needs to lead or get out of the way.

Yeah Nate was being a punk and complaining none stop about the refs and LB told him to shut his mouth. And then Nate kept complaining. It took another 10 seconds before he finally understood that he's an out of control rookie and the refs aren't his problem.
