He had a rant about Scott Layden. Calling him the worst executive in professional sports history. He mentioned how he dismantled the gritty NY knicks and put together a boring team jump shooters.

Then he was all like "It wasnt even the bad trades and signings. In a town where there are so many distractors, he said Watch my product, it speaks for itself." Which I took as saying that Scott had no flair for the dramatic and the life got sucked out of the Knicks. So true. Those Layden teams, with a healthy dose of Dolan control, were so un-NY, so boring, so CONSERVATIVE. He really did create a pseudo Utah Jazz here. Bastard. I hate him.

Thanks Stephen Smith. I wish he spent a full 30 minutes on his rant.

I wonder what tipped Stephen off? Could it have been:

Howard Eisley-played in Utah
Shandon Anderson-played in Utah
Keith Van Horn-Went to the University of Utah
Michael Doleac-went to the University of Utah
Travis Knight-From Utah
Felton Spencer-played in Utah

its pretty stupid to call layden dumb if you want to add in his utah jazz history in the front office and personell director. they had 20 years of winning. i just dont think that layden was a fit here. he RARELY made moves with utah, and to move to a team where the prime directive is the playoffs--its basically do not draft anyone, only vets etc...and the guy got smoked on Mcdyess. i think he was a guy who was supposed to be in the backround behind checkettes

He traded camby and NeNe for Mcdyess, that was one of the most lopsided trades I've ever witnessed. What was the point in giving up NeNe with Camby? Just plain stupidity

because camby's reputation was s##t at that point. missed more games than played. always suing someone, whining about something, hurt, pouting, the works. he wasn't exactly a hot commodity at that point.

Now he's getting 22 rebounds in one game. Just because a player wants out of town dosen't mean you hi-jack the future to do it. Layden was a pansy who picked up pansy players who made the Knicks obsolete for two seasons. Stupid is as stupid does

i agree with you about layden and about that trade. however it doesn't change the situation that existed at that time. i'd like to hear others' memories of how they felt about camby at that time.

I was an advocate for moving Camby out. I was still stinging from him and Latrell saying that we were better off without Ewing(no respect). But all bias aside at the time I was not opposed to trading Camby. But from those who knew me at MSGboards I was vehemently opposed to building our future around a guy that was coming off major surgery. Layden and the rest of the organization were playing to sell tickets and needed a big name star.

The thing that gets me most is that Layden and some in the media were surprised when he was fired. Some even said it was unfair.

I'd bring him back for a day just so I could fire him again for that ludacris contract he gave my main man Allan Houston.

Win two games and we all bad now!

Why Smith even want to rant on Layden anyway? Kinda old news?

Last week some of y'all were ready to throw a rope up and hang Larry, or Isiah!

Camby Planter facious or what ever you call it held him back game to game. This guy was fragile and always hurt.

NeNe has not done much since coming in the league. Sure he got upside, but he got a bad knee now, and in 4 seasons has not don't a whole hell of a lot!

NENE would not have been able to help us ALL that much the past few years.

As for Scotty, he gets more blame than actually what was his doing.

THis is so over discussed I can't believe it keeps getting bought up!

He is the face for an ORGANIZATIONAL failure.

Stephen A Smith bringing his name up again? Ratings must be slipping!

In Stphen A's defense he's been going nuts about Layden since the summer. He's great when he talks knicks on the radio. I dont think he's wrong for bringing it up now. He's just saying what alot of knicks fans feel. Layden managed to make the knicks irrelevant in the league. Yes we have a long way to go now, but it's a much better plan than the one we had under layden.

The Knicks were in Utah last night. Most of the time in sports things go on and on like the Lakers and Celtics rivalry which hasn't been interesting in 15 years. This topic gone come up every time we play Utah and Layden's sitting on the bench

Two years ago! Two years!

38 players later, its all old news!

Organizational failure!

No doubt Layden sucked, but he was GM only Two years!

The problem was deeper than 24 months of Scott Layden!

We need Goldberg to film a documentry on the subject! Chronological events and blame.

Would be interesting.

They need to put it on E entertainment television. Call it true NBA stories "Two years later Knicks still floundering from Layden's mishaps".
