Steph responding to the accusation that he doesn’t maximize his teammates potential like a Kidd or Nash:
SM: My response to that is to say that when you look at the game of basketball, first of all, if you and I are on a team, I can’t make you do nothing, you got be held accountable for something. So, when we step on a basketball court, all of this about “he made him better” or “he made him do this” and “he made him do that” you can’t make nobody do nothing on the basketball court. As far as guys, as far as guys saying “oh, I can’t play with him” there got to be a reason why they can’t play with me because when I’m on the basketball court I’m putting forth the effort to win the game, I’m not putting forth the effort to go out and show that Stephon Marbury can do more than another person or another player, you know what I’m sayin. So when I’m out on the court, I’m out on the court trying to win the game. And whatever entails winning the game that’s what I’m out there doing.
SAS: But when they talk about leadership and getting guys around you to maximize their potential they also point to everything—to things that are said, to body language, things of that nature—you don’t see Jason Kidd getting in somebody’s face and looking frustrated—you don’t see that from Steve Nash. There has been footage, a lot of film, where you see Stephon Marbury, especially when you were with the NJ Nets—and I don’t blame you for that—but especially when you were with the NJ Nets...
SM; How come you don’t blame me for that but you blame me for something else?
SAS: No no no no, I don’t blame you for it, what I’m saying is, when they point to it that’s their excuse. Me, personally, I think you’re a bad man, personally, but I also think Jason Kidd is a bad boy too—I don’t think Steve Nash can mess with you.
