He was good back in high school, but has fallen off the radar big time. Do you all think we should give him a Jackie Butler chance because he's still relativley young and he might be worth taking a peek at?

The Rockford Lightning have signed former New York City playground legend Lenny Cooke and former Oklahoma State center Antoine Broxsie for the upcoming CBA season.

Cooke, a 6-foot-6 forward, was the 2003 United States Basketball League Rookie of the Year and was named first team all-league that season after he led the league in scoring with 28.7 points per game and steals with 3.2 per game. He won the league scoring title with a 53-point performance on the final day of the season.

Cooke, who missed most of last season with the ABA’s Long Beach Jam with a broken leg, also is noted for his high school AAU duels with current NBA All-Star LeBron James and was rated by some experts as the second-best high school player behind James during that time.

“Lenny is someone who is going to cause problems in the CBA for a lot of people,” Lightning coach Chris Daleo said. “Lenny is a 6-foot-6 matchup problem. He can handle the ball like a guard and can go down to the block and get a bucket at will. He is long and can defend multiple positions.

“I’ve been trying to bring Lenny to Rockford for many years and now I’m glad to have him on board. We’re expecting many great things from Lenny and I know we won’t be disappointed with him this year.”

I was about to dismiss this thread as one of those generic "give this guy a chance" threads that we always see when we have a hole in our roster. But after reading that he did alright for himself in organized basketball (even though it is the USBL of 2003) I say if we have an empty roster spot why not sign him? Personally i dont see anything wrong with a 10 day contract. Larry Brown may not want to extend it anyway if his defense isnt there. Anyone know if he developed any defensive ability? I imagine he would be in the league already if he did.

I think the question with Lenny has always been his head. I remember when I went to the ABCD camp back a few years ago it was Lenny Cooke vs Lebron all day long and Lenny Cooke took him to school more then a few times, he did it with dribbling, shooting, dunking, you name it. He has amazing talent, I just don't know what his psychological state is because I think he certainly would have been drafted with the skills he has.

He was big headed, but playing in the CBA and all those other minor pro leagues should have humbled him some. I just think if he was a step under Lebron like people say it wouldn't hurt to bring him in because we need help at SF. And since we going young and looking for hungry guys I think he might be able to fit(if we could only find a way too get rid of hardaway).

Lenny Cooke can play. Dude is a streetball player though.
He's been playing organized ball for a while now so maybe he has tamed his game.

I remember seeing him play somewhere....it had to be professional in the states and he just run full speed to the foul line and stopped on a dime and started dribbling through his legs like 30 times then finally driving in for a dunk.

If he is still doing that he will never make it to the big leagues. I wanna see Isiah give him a try before Don Nelson, Kiki or some other bozo around the league does. He is a huge talent.....physically at least.

The story I heard about him and Lebron was that all the media was there and everything(ABCD Camp)....there was a big debate on who was better and Lebron destroyed Lenny Cooke bad.....Lebron dropped like 20plus and Cooke had single digits.....that day was supposed to be Lebron James coming out party.....and the end of Lenny Cooke.

If Isiah is going to let Penny rot off the books, why not buy him out and sign this kid and let him play into the D-league? Let him play down this year, then ride the pine next. In two years you might have somthing.

Lenny, Omar, two Cook(e)s that can!

Exactly what I was going to post! Tell Penny he can go home, buy him out- and stick Lenny there.

Can you assign him to the D league if your signing him as basically a free agent?

That said, I might rather have a slow footed spot up shooting prospect fill that spot- someone that might develop into a lethal outside shooter-

I agree with you guys. I like Penny on this roster(I should say ACTIVE rosteR), I think he's a smart veteran, who isn't going to put up even mediocre numbers but at the same time is a player that when he's on the court doesn't make mistakes, especially with the ball in his hands. If Penny is going to be stashed on the Inactive list then I don't seen much of the point to have him on the roster unless Isiah has plans to trade his contract before the deadline. If Penny stays with the team all year, doesn't get traded and sees most of the time on the inactive roster then I don't understand the point of having him.

ABCD Camp: Battle For No. 1 Is Over,
And LeBron Wins--(July 10, 2001)

While our good friend Clark Francis has consistently ranked Lenny Cooke (6'-6" Sr. F) from Brooklyn, NY as his No. 1 player at ABCD for the past three days, today's matchup with the consensus No. 1 player in high school in the country, LeBron James (6'-7 So. F) from Akron, Ohio, resulted in the unofficial crowning of a new No. 1, and that probably means that if there ever was any doubt about who the current "best" player is, there isn't or at least wasn't today in the head-to-head matchup between the two. With his team trailing by two points, and only second remaining on the clock, James took the inbounds pass down at the far end of the court, sprinted to just across midcourt, and as the buzzer sounded, launched a three-pointer which swished in, giving his team the win and sending the assembled camp, including college coaches, counselors, media and the rest of the spectators into a frenzy.

Cooke managed to get in his own licks a couple of times, but finished with only 9 points. He did manage to show some devastating crossover moves which had everyone gasping for breath, and which had James checking his ankles. Cooke may be small by NBA standards, but he's one of the best ballhandlers we've seen in a while, and he passes and makes excellent decisions and would probably project to be a very nice pro point guard someday. And from what we're hearing, that "someday" just might be closer than a lot of people might expect. Cooke has exhausted his high school eligibility, is 19 years old (maybe older) and will still have one more year of school just to be able to qualify, so he will go to a prep school this fall. Whether he never plays a day in college, he showed today that even in defeat he's still a great player, and his team actually played great "team" ball.

But James was just too much, particularly when combined with Leon Powe and Adam Haluska, and the three of them combined for a total of 66 of the team's 84 points. James had 24 and he was just unstoppable in the second half. In the tradition of the camp, when two players of this stature go head-to-head, the coaches played them both for the entire 32 minutes. Cooke hung with James during the first half, but in the second, it was all James, as he scored in a variety of ways, with slick moves to the basket, and unbelievable body control.

^^^^ That was the day I spoke about at the ABCD camp. He didn't show up when the big dog came through.....he killed his amatuer status and there you have it....he disappears. I'd love to see the guy get that star back. I just hope dude is still playing and not into anything illegal.

but still he should have been drafted, i remember a few teams worked him out but still didn't keep him, for what matter it was i don't recall, maybe they had guaranteed contracts and had to let him go, but unless we make a trade or cut a player, we can't do much

ESPN tv ran a special report on eligibility last year that focused on lenny's fall from NBA potential. If I remember correctly, he was playing ball in some minor league at the time of the report.

The report itself was kinda gloomy, and they made it out to seem like teams lost interest after he got outplayed by lebron at the ABCD camp. They showed a clip from an interview with one of the minor league coaches, who said Lenny was often the best player on the court where he's playing now.

If we were trying to get under the salary cap that would be fine. But since we're not, it makes much more sense to use Penny's expiring contract as a trade asset. And we can get a player much better than Cook with that asset.

Somebody will give Lenny a 10-day. He's still very young so he'll make the league before long.

That sucks...at least he can still play for money. Would be nice to see him get picked up. Gotta rep Brooklyn.
