I have been saying this for about 5 years now. The 'next guy' after Michael Jordan is already here: His name is Tim Duncan. Duncan is going to get somewhere in the neighborhood of six rings barring serious injury...LeBron will have to wait his turn like Jordan and Shaq did.

I don't mean to say Duncan is "The greatest Ever", but his success is ridiculous, and it has come earlier in his career than Jordan or Shaq, with a more varied team than either for every championship, and it doesn't look to be fading anytime soon. He should go down as the dominant player between Jordan and possibly Lebron.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Between Jordan and Lebron? What about Shaquille O'Neall? Where does he fit in?

The way I am seeing it, there is a tossup, but Duncan's success has come early, and then now in his mid-career, and I don't see him slowing down.

Shaq's success came early too, but winning it all came in his mid-career and I do see him slowing down. Having said that, currently, I think Miami is right behind the Spurs.

I just think Tim Duncan will win it all 5-6 times and Shaq maybe 4.

But it is debateable.

very interesting discussion.

i totally agree with your assessment of duncan - just pure greatness. i see him as having the inside track over shaq to fulfill title of most dominant player post-jordan, but a lot will be said by total rings in the end.

in the menatime i would take some issue with your title, tim duncan, the next michael josrdan. i think michael's in the most select of select group of players who changed the way the game was played. i don't even include mikan or russell or wilt in this group because i see them having changed the game through their size, not with just playing a whole different game out there. the guys i have in this category came in a lineage - paul arizin to elgin baylor to julius erving to larry bird/magic johnson to michael jordan to . . . ??? will it be lebron? might be. what he did in just his 2nd year was phenomenol with that 27, 7 and 7 stuff

Duncan's had better all around teams and coaching early in his career. People overrate star players and underrate the quality of their teams. Shaq's a more dominant player and probably would have won more than titles than Duncan has at the same age if he had the same supporting cast (David Robinson in his prime followed by Parker, Ginobili, and an outstanding coach and system).

Lebron???? are you all nuts? that kid has yet to do anything in this league. Can you all please give props to players that deserve it....Iverson marched his team to the finals, Kidd did the same, Vince helped his team deep in the playoffs...etc...please spare me the speach about Lebron. He is good, but he is not that good yet.

when people say somebody is going to be the next jordan their not only talkin championships but they are talking about a high flying exciting take over the game type player. MJ made the league popular again Tim Duncan is argueably the most boring player in the league. So I think Lebron is the closest to the NEXT Jordan tag...for now
