It's a little old but I just found this now
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/3882560
Patrick Ewing. Had he played out of the spotlight in someplace like Orlando or Salt Lake City, Ewing would be remembered as a jump-shooting center who worked hard. Period. With the adulatory New York fans and media filtering their perceptions through the lens of their need to have heroes to celebrate, Ewing was celebrated as being far better than he really was. In truth, he couldn't handle, pass, move laterally, and do anything worthwhile when an important game was on the line. Moreover, his dim apprehension of what the game was all about precluded any thoughts of being unselfish. Except for the early days of the Mets and the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York sports fans rarely hitch their devotion to a loser like Ewing.

Someone sounds bitter.

Ewing was a warrior who I honestly love like an uncle. I almost cried when he came back to the garden with seattle. Screw this writer. Ewing gave me some great memories and he always played hard, I'll always celebrate him for that.

Personally in my opinion Ewing is not over-rated. My only knock was that I wish Ewing had the fire like he had in his hoyas days.

That is one of the worst assesments I have ever seen. Was Ewing clutch? NO, But he did get his team to the conference finals twice, the NBA Finals twice, and they played the Bulls better than anyone in 92,93, and 97. If Jordan isn't in the East they go to the finals at least 5 times....

That Statement to this crowd is expected to go over not well.

Objectivley I have read some comments over the years that broke down his game a bit more than the above and I must say there are elements of truth to it.

Time grows the heart fonder and we have done so with patrick.

I can be objective about his shortcomings, and the record does speak for itself.

Still, I liked his game and he was the centerpiece of a nice run.

Maybe it is fair to say his monumental ego is what made him go further in his career, but was also the thing that prevented him from furthering his team a bit more. A few more rebounds, a few more outlet passes, a few more looks to kick the ball out or over in the post might have done it.

It is well documented his contract year and Don Nelson wanting to reduce his role made for an ugly situation. THis was 1996 and Nelson thought He was starting to slow down. He was right, but we were not willing to let him walk either. The rest is history.

I don't care if dudes want to write this crap. Its old old news.

Kinda interesting article. He calls out some great names and has a point.

Likewise he got three former knicks on his underated team!

In a way, bonnie, your doing the same crap as these writers. Looking for attention and do so by offering a negative view.

Why not mention the others?

Willis, Lucas and bradley might not be overrated to us, cuz we fans still rank them high on our lists. If we tend to overrate our own, then Im sure to some extent we have with ewing also.

It's a Knick forum. I figured the thread would just get moved if I focussed on all the other players.

The THree Knicks mentioned on the UNDER rated column! Those others?

After reading the other entries, Ewing might have been overrated, along with Barkley, Robinson, Etc!

I can believe Ewing was over-rated on the other hand:

1) He kept the Knick competitive for over a decade surrounded by little more then role players.

2) He never took all the team all the way - But Jordan was (arguably) the best player ever and Pippen was certainly better then anyone playing with Ewing.

3) The Loss to Houston could be held against him - but he did a much better job against Olajuwan then Shaq did the following year or Robinson did in the playoffs. (Olajawan was the best player in the league when Jordan "retired").

So yeah he didn't have an all around game and his stats aren't as dominant as some. But then how the hell did he keep that team so competitive.

Oh, okay. I mentioned that the article was old. I wasn't sure if someone had already posted it. (It still generated a lot of replies again, though.)

I whole-heartedly disagree that Ewing was overrated.... he is never on anyone's top 10 list of Centers, he is never talked about as a HoF player, barely talked about as an All Star, etc etc. He is usually referred to outside of NY as being ugly, slow, bad knees, etc

The fact that he showed so much perseverance, was a leader to his team, and carried the entire team on his back for 10 years in the world's biggest stage, is why I am a huge Ewing fan. To me, he was the underdog

If Scotty Sterling hadn't f'ed up by trading the rights to the draft pick that was used to draft Pippen for Juwann "freakin" Oldham, Ewing would have likely won multiple championships, and jerks like Rosen would STFU.
