There are a number of reasons to expect a slow start:

1) This was a bad team last year.
2) We will have at least three new starters - none of whom is a superstar.
3) Our bench is filled with new players with undefined rolls and unknown levels of performance.
4) We have a new coach with a new System.
5) This team is extremely young and lacks leadership.

Even good, experienced players need time to form a team identity. This team has very few proven, experienced good players. IT has a lot of inexperienced players that we expect eventually to be good players. I just can't think of a team that has made an immediate drastic improvement in similar circumstances.

Which leads to my prediction:
Below .500 first half.
Above .500 second half.

I can't get any more specific then that - this team has too many wild cards. What do other posters think?

I think Mo Taylor is actually going to flourish playing for Larry Brown. He's going to get a lot of minutes. This will be the turning point for his career.

pretty much agree with everything you said. If it wasn't for Larry Brown and his tract record we'd be headed straight for the lottery with this team

Prediction: Mo Taylor and Jerome James combine for 800 lbs. by the end of the season and join the WWE as a tag team.

In all seriousness, I think Curry was an extra 3-4 wins. Right now I'm going to guess 43 wins.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Interesting replies because in reading other threads I thought folks were getting irrationally exuberant - even for fans.

They are getting irrationally exuberant. Just those irrationally exuberant posters haven't posted in this thread yet. ;)

dodo should enter the thread any second with a prediction of 65 wins.

Which one is kool aid and which one is hater aid?

Expectations (kool aid - optimism): 50 wins, second round battle with the Heat
Predictions (hater aid - conservatism): 45 wins, tough first round exit to Indiana (in 5)

If everything breaks right (jingoism): Knock out Miami in second round, lose to detroit in 6.

no doubt
all kool aid all the time.

I don't see any hater-aid from the choices you gave.

Hater-aid is suggesting something like 28 wins (which I believe one poster did).

And 45 wins, IMHO, is optimistic (this team is still VERY young). 50 wins is a little out there, and the thought of making it to the eastern conference finals is downright betting on snake eyes.

Dude, you're not just sipping the kool-aid, you're drinking it by the gallon.

yeah, I'm shooting for 50 because I think lb can get us those 30 home wins. I'm still living in the land of 40 wins LAST YEAR. I don't believe we really only won 33...just does not compute.

additional wins:
LB - 7 (his average),
Curry - 3 wins (I'm expecting 3 MONSTER games)
Q - 2 wins (similar to his abuse of the knicks last year)
rookie class - 3 wins

That puts us up to 48 if we only won 33 last year

ofcourse, pure speculation, but you guys know I'm addicted to the aid.

See, but that's all the positives. What about the downsides?

Rookie mistakes -- cost us 3 games
Curry doesn't defend the guy properly on the final shot -- costs us 1 game
LBs coaching is ineffectual for half a season because the team hasn't gelled and he doesn't know the players -- costs us 2 games

etc...

All of the sudden you're back down to 43. That's the kool-aid problem. You look at the bright sides and ignore the downsides. It's not a linear thing. We're not going from Bonn at PF to Frye, we're going from Sweetney and KT to Frye. Nate may not even play much. Lee is on the IR. Butler is on the IR. I say the rookie factor is way overrated this season.

He's not even mixing it with water. It's going straight up his nose in the powder form.

Hater-aid would be something like:

Curry has major heart problems
Marbury can't adjust to not having the ball and clashes with LB
Frye is too soft to play in the middle
Nate is really an out of control 5'7 SG
Lee can't get any playing time with all the veteran PF's on the team
Ariza's basketball skills haven't improved
Jerome is as big of a bust as everybody thinks he is going to be
Penny, Mo T and Rose are still on the team
AD decides he doesn't want to spend the holidays away from his family
LB's act gets old even quicker around this questionable bunch
Crawford continues to hoist up 5 bad shots a game and isn't the PG that LB wants him to be
They miss the playoffs and watch the Bulls win the lottery with their pick while the Spurs have the best record in the league.

Oy. That would be the absolute worst case scenario. The Knicks would be pwned.

Agreed. I see anywhere from 40-45 wins as most likely. I'll settle for the middle and say 43. Wouldn't shock me to see slightly sub-.500 for the whole season either (~38 wins). I'll wager that we win 50+ next season, but much of this season will be spent just building up to that point, and there will be some growing pains. The tough road schedule to start off doesn't help things either.
