I have read many reviews of this team. Some hate, some think Brown will eventually prevail, and most pretty much call out our weakness's. And since we do have some apparent weakness's at the moment, the haters prevail for now.
Last night was my first viewing of the team and I guess the first thing out the window is consistancy. They looked awful.
Curry is a moster, but gets into foul trouble. What else is new? Foul problems are the result of many things, including lack of conditioning. If a hating writer is calling it as they see it, and after 4 years in the league is a trend, then Curry will get hate until he breaks the trend. Justifiable in one view. Optimists will wish for better. Pick your line. But he won't change over nite.
If any article written Pre Curry was full of hate because of our relience at that time having Big Lame as our starting center, this too is justified. THe Kool aid laden circle jerk elevation of James talent written in these threads really was wishful thinking that since Isiah signed him, this must really be the deal! Big Lame talks about ego, commitment, and that we have yet to see the real deal, but we have.
Season ending waivers in the last few days see dreams being shattered. Getting down to roster before the season about 100 players got cut. Many who made the teams have one, maybe two year deals for under a million dollars. many of these kids can play and work real hard. Its a real shame that Size alone can factor so large. Big game parlayed 5 games into 30 million dollars and did little this summer to back up his words. IMagine we really had to rely on him for our starting center? And we think KT was bad? This guy is awful! Phuch the Kool Aid, he sucks! And the later addition of the more demanding Larry Brown reveals him even worse! With so many players getting cut who worked much harder than him, its kind of a shame on the big lame that he can play the system this way. And is making Isiah look bad.
At this moment in time we lack a Larry Brown floor general. Marbs and Craw are getting remodeled-remade and will take time. I can see Marbs getting frustrated largely at himself. These two get a big pass from me for the majority of the season. TO do this right, they need to go thru a painful process. We need a veteran point who gets it and can get us thru this transition. This need not be a multi year kinda of thing, but Larry is going to need someone to trust down the stretch. Nate is a wild man whose turnovers are way too many. Many rookie mistakes. We have yet to see Q in any significant play yet. Penny as awful as he is brings some composure to the back court. If he can help us the 1st half of the season this would be just fine. He is on the payroll so why the hell not! I am fine with marbs and Craw but gotta give it time. Thay ain't never gonna be Kidd/Carter! But we don't need them to be either.
Small forward: Again we need a short term fix until Reezy figures it out. Banres looked good in stretches last nite. PF: Once again, who's gonna fill it until Frye gets settled? I think Mo T , ,might have the nod here with Frye and Lee also getting rotation minutes. Lee looks good, just needs composure. He rushes his shot. Very rookie like.
Substitutes: Larry used his whole bench crazy last nite using Butler at crunch time. He really did not respond to the quality minutes. One more time: Composure, or the lack of.
This team looks like it should. The vets are almost rookies because they are learning many many new things. This is rebuilding and I hope when we say be patient that means we are willing to stick it out. Panic trades and suggestions by the faithful after each game is not being patient. Thats a knee jerk reaction. I do think our team is out of balance and we will make minor moves like Lynch at SF and a veteran Point. We should give up only expendable parts like Rose and perhaps Penny. AD is a wild card and again can also be the short term player but at 37 he is been breaking down a bit. He and penny are expiring contracts but with them you have to give up a young player to get a good one in return. I don't want to give up our youth! Let them expire!
Isiah should be prudent and patient but it depends on how long and ugly this thing could get. They need to stay close to the playoff pack or risk losing fan interest (AKA: MONEY!) I expect minor trades sooner than later.
As any fan, I expect much improvement of this team and this will be a hell of a ride. Larry will want some roster changes and I think he is intitled to have his components in place. Him being not involved in the Big Lame Sweepstakes and the draft did not allow him to get the parts he might have preferred. Not complaining, just stating.
The flashes of brilliance by Curry whom is very effiecent suggests all star performances providing he can keep his butt on the floor and out of the tatoo parlor. (random tats everywhere!) Curry has so much potential but one must take heed of the haters whom point out he after 4 years is not where he could be. Fans will excuse cuz of coaching, Cuz he was young, cuz he did not feel well. Those may be part true, but he is still out of condition and a history of bad habits on an off the court. Nothing terrible mind you. His per 40 min production would be crazy if he actually could stay out there!
To sum up, I see the team as young and raw and look forward to this team going thru the rebuilding reality that is often over looked by the faithful but not always by the hating media. Isiah must keep the hating media at bay by setting lose the propoganda machine that larry is going to get this done with these guys and "it will be great" in time! Locally on the UltimateKnicks.com network we can expect to see more short term evaluations and trade theories that can suggest instantly changing things.
Patience is not just a word. Use it!
