Will it be hard to keep Butler and Ariza?

I've been wondering about this. If they both play well, we still have only one MLE obviously next offseason, which Ariza alone might require.

Nah, the league has some kind of rule, wouldn't the gilbert Arenas rule apply to Ariza? Butler shouldn't cost more than the LLE.

It would apply to Ariza, but you'd still have to use the MLE on him. If Butler plays anywhere near how he played in one preseason game, he'll get more than the LLE. The LLE is 2 yrs about 3 mil. Udonis Haslem, Adonal Foyle, Jerome James all got 30 to 40 mil contracts. PF/Cs get large contracts. I don't think you can feel safe with the idea that no team would offer butler more than $3 mil unless we hide him on the bench all season.

If you sign Ariza to a 5 year 30 mil contract, it will use up the full MLE and the most we could offer Butler would be the LLE (2 yrs, $3 mil), whereas your $15 mil prediction could easily be a reasonable one for what it would take to keep Butler if he plays decently

This is a good point. It'd be smart of Isiah to lock up Butler on the cheap right now, at least for a couple of seasons. Ariza I don't think we have to worry about with the new Arenas rule, thank God. Without it we would be in great danger of losing him I think.

Let's just hope that Jackie Butler gets the time that he deserves so far this season. Larry is a great coach but asking him to goto a 10-11 man rotation this year is ALOT. I hope Jackie sees enough playing time to warrant the contract that alot of us think he can get, he's been bigtime so far this preseason.

Zeke is too smart to allow either of those young cats to go and play elsewhere. We are going a lot of rooms to make move, especially once Davis, Penny and Mo's deal are off of our book....Those 3 combined for about 40 million. Let's not also forget that Jerome Williams' contract and Malik's will also come off the book in 07

CRAZY!!! The way people talk about Ariza on this board is insane. This kid has not really improved on anything since the off season. Don't get me wrong, I like his energy and youthfulness but he needs to improve on his game before we talk about giving him all this money. He is basically the same player from last year.

The reason I bring this up is because someone can impove in an off season and he didn't. Jackie Butler is leaps and bounds better than he was last year.

I don't see Butler getting significant minutes this year. I think the numbers you guys are throwing out are way optimistic (or pessimistic given that Butler's playing time would only be a result of injuries or poor play from guys like Frye, Curry, Davis, James, Lee, Rose & even Mo.

Look I like both players especially Ariza, but both of them still have alot to prove. I to think JB will buried most of the season. Take it easy with the contract talks. To soon to say. If ariza carries on the same way I cant see him getting more than 3 mil a year for a few years.
What happened to Travis Knight? What a waste!

That is why it is imperative to trade Penny, Malik and Mo....I have proposed a 3 way trade between the Knicks, N.O. and Portland, please check it out..
