From The Times:

After playing 11 minutes Tuesday, Jerome James vowed to redouble his efforts to get in better shape. Coach Larry Brown said James was not ready for the season. "I agree with the coach," said James, who said he had lost 27 pounds.

Don't the Knicks sort of have leverage to fine James? Doesn't a pro player's basic agreement with the club state he must stay in reasonable shape and report to training camp in "reasonable physical condition"? Shouldn't "reasonable physical condition" mean he has to be able to perform his job? James was signed around Aug. 2, so he had two months prior to camp to get in shape, which is enough time for a pro athlete.

If I were Isiah, Dolan or Larry Brown, I'd be so furious with this guy. Especially Isiah, who did James a huge solid by handing him a ridiculous $30 million deal that no other GM in his right mind would have done.

At least Curry sort of has an excuse for being out of shape. What's James' excuse?

they bought his aberrational playoff run. they shouldve done more homework on him, his character in terms of fitness, clubhouse, work ethic, intensity has been suspect his whole career except for 3 weeks before he gets paid again.

they seem to just throw money at vet players like it was coming off trees. if they touch theo ratliff, its just pure insanity-- while theo takes care of his body better, his body is already done. what kind of PR nightmare is that-pay 30mm for a guy and suspend him before game 1?

they wont do it

i think they should chill unless someone wants to give us baron davis for an ending contract

portland is dealing from a very weak hand--let them BEG for a deal-their fans are pssed off and they have vets who are already in high gear mouthing

my goodnes if i was making 6-8mm a year for playing basketball, id do whatever they wanted me to do, and then clean the bathrooms as a bonus and NEVEr mouth off--these guys are spoiled beyond belief

I'm upset about Jerome too. I was rooting for him to have a good season from start. If we didn't have Curry I would be pissed.

Curry has shown he is for real so I'm happy about that. Jerome will eventually work himself into game shape getting his usual 15 minutes per game......I'm so disappointed in him. I'm a big fan of him and I was definately excited about getting him I gotta admitt.

I just don't understand what is the big deal to be rich and in shape. Give me what I make now just to play basketball and I would be in tip top shape. 5 plus million a year? Sheeet.....all I gotta do it stay in shape playing the game I love? That is easy money.

JJ has only needed to play 15 minutes a game over the past 5 seasons... Now he's finding out what kind of shape he needs to be in to log more minutes. And you know Larry Brown's "game shape" is probably more than other coaches demand.

if you accept jerome for what he is, a 7 foot stiff that can play in the nba, then, when he logs 18 mins a game for us, averages 6 & 5 or something like that, you'll be happy.

He is a filler for the c position. He was never supposed to replace ewing, just be a big body up front that would allow us to play frye at the 4.

Now, he is a back up and insurance for curry. For $5m and his skill set, I think he's a decent option.

But agreed, being out of shape is bad. And its good to see Larry is going to crack the whip.

Dont forget. We have Butler who can step in and give 10 to 15 minutes at the Center spot and AD who can man the Center spot if needed.

Eh we got Curry IT gets a pass for being desperate for a center. Imagine just having James though right about now and having a total ? at center.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?
