Brown: Knicks' Big Guys Need To Get In Shape
24th October, 2005 - 2:18 am
NY Times - Coach Larry Brown has yet to settle on a starting lineup or a consistent rotation, and part of the problem is that his best big men are not ready for extended playing time.

Center Eddy Curry was off for nearly seven months after experiencing heart trouble when he was with Chicago. His backup, Jerome James, missed most of training camp because of a hamstring strain. Antonio Davis, a possible starter at power forward, joined the team only a week ago.

"I just think our big guys, in particular Eddy and Jerome, are not in the kind of shape they need to be in to play in the N.B.A. right now," Brown said. "But we still have time. And they will get in shape, and they will help us." [READ]

I think if the season started today the lineup would be

C = BUTLER
PF = FRYE
SF = ARIZA
SG = MARBS
PG = CRAW

6TH = LEE
7TH = NATE
8TH = CURRY
9TH = JJ

IR = Q / AD

Butler and Lee will be hard pressed to even make the rotation. Butler especially

Fish, Butler has been the most consistant front court player we have this preseason next to Frye. Check the stats, he has better numbers than Curry, JJ Rose, Mo T. Only Lee & Frye can compare.

i don't know i'm inclined to think butler's going to get minutes. jj and curry have some pretty pressing conditioning issues and butler's impressed lb in the middle. he seems to really prefer to play frye at the 4. why do you think he'll hold butler out?

I would not be upset with that rotation. I have a feeling AD is going to be bought out. Rose stuck in the bench. MoT shipped out to a PF deprived team. Penny stuck in the bench. Q would leap frog over Nate when he comes back.

Big Game being out of shape is outragious! He came in in bad shape and both the hammies went cuz he did not do enough this summer! This guy is so happy to just be a backup and get his money.

He talked all summer telling everyone what they wanted to hear about being mature and stepping it up to show the world.

ANd come to camp out shape?

Good for Jackie Blue and I hope he gets rostered and some burn! Im glad Larry will raise the bars with these guys and not play them to just make Isiah look good. Isiah could have bullied Herb into getting those guys to play, but not Larry!

Its important that Eddie and Big Lame get in shape and play into it! Especially Big Lame, he must step it up for two reasons, we need big men, and it just raises his value incase anyone would want him!

Big Lame is good!

He's just upping the drama on his Most Improved Player campaign this year.

Ha Ha Ha! I just want him in there and play 15-18 min and use his 6 fouls with malicious intent
We haven't had a player to intimidate since the days of XMan, Oak and Mase and to some extent Anthony Bonner.

Butler's been contributing, but I doubt that he'll make starter. Rotation? LB has to include him.

There's still a good chance AD will start @ PF though.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Experience for one. Now enough minutes to go around for another.
Despite them being out of shape I have little doubt that AD/Curry/JJ are getting starter type minutes. I think it starts out as something like this:
C: Curry 24, James 15
PF: AD: 24
And thats being conservative. That leaves 33 minutes for Frye, Lee, Rose, Mo T and Butler. Of those guys I think the only lock is Frye, and I think barring foul trouble he could and should get the majority of those bench minutes.

Maybe I am wrong and even if LB plays 9-10 guys there is still a major numbers crunch and nowhere more than in the frontcourt.

I agree that this is the lineup that deserves to play. They earned it. The other guys better get the message

we will see. The have certainly played well at times and againt quality NBA talent. I havent seen Jackie play extended minutes so I cant really say. He's obviously shown some nice flashes and it appears his game where he did get some good time was against the Spurs (not televised)

I think the rotation will be a good indication of Larry's agenda. If you see more of Lee/Nate/Butler then you see of Penny/Rose/Mo T then I would say its safe to assume LB really is trying to build something and is on board with a 3-4 year plan.

They will make mistakes. We have seen Nate play out of control and Frye fail to box out in critical moments of the game. We have also seen them clamp down on D, hit critical FTs, get steals make plays. Its pretty obvious they can play, and even more obvious that guys like Mo T can see their minutes being threatened.

Hey.. I'm a Knick fan. I hope they get burn and when I see it I will believe it

I don't believe there will be too big of a numbers crunch in the front court. I would be shocked if Antonio Davis was not bought out on Thursday (earliest date he can go back to the Bulls), his family did not move into New York, they went back to Chicago. I believe Mo Taylor will see some time, but very little for Malik. That leaves:

Curry/Butler/JJ
Frye/Lee/Mo T

Deep, but hardly a crunch, especially since Curry and James have never been able to stay on the court for long stretches and with Lee and Frye being rookies who will be on a short leash.

so i guess this whole "preseason doesn't count" crap is out the window...

lb is making his decisions based on what he's seen in these "don't count for nothin" games.

man up and admit you were wrong you mooks...
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Look for our youngins to get considerable amount of playing time. Lee, Nate, Frye, and Butler will play a lot more than James and Curry...

good point nalod, as far as curry he has an excuse but reports also show that he was working out this summer, so he did his best it seems to stay in shape, I mean the guy hasn't played ball in a while and he had reasons for that... Big james is a clown, should be in shape, no excuse, I want him to play well early, so we can ship his azz out of here, at least by the trade deadline...

^ I'd LOVE to ship him out to a team desperate for size.

Maybe Q along with him.
