NO DRESS CODE ISSUE: The NBA's new dress code is of no concern to the Knicks, who follow their own, stricter code, established by team president Isiah Thomas as soon as he arrived.

And to avoid the potential financial hardship that would cause rookies Channing Frye, David Lee and Nate Robinson, Marbury bought each of them 10 new suits via his endorsement contract with a designer.

PPl hate on marbs just for the sake of hating, he's a very charitable person who gives to his community and teamates...

Kudos to Marbs and everything but don't all 1st-rounders make at least a million dollars? You can't buy yourself 10 suits when you make a million dollars????

Marbury has been doing that for his teammates that are young. He is a very charitable person as evidence to his donation to the Hurricane Katrina victims. He also gave/helped his brazilian teammate from the Suns (Barbosa) get his new car. I think he actually bought the car. An interview with Barbosa indicated that he considers Stephon his big brother.

A friend in Marbury

The Suns hope to extend Marcelo's stay for as long as possible. He is currently in the United States on a visitor's visa. But even his Brazilian cooking can't prepare the baby in the Barbosa family for what he has begun to encounter. The NBA is a different jungle than the one Sgt. Barbosa survived, but it can be a jungle, nonetheless.

Enter a surrogate big brother, Stephon Marbury.

The Suns veteran playmaker has been quietly communicating with Barbosa through Fernandes, friendship and a game.

"Off the floor, he has to understand he's a guy suddenly making a lot of money," said Marbury, whose dressing stall in the Suns locker room at America West Arena is next to Barbosa's. "He has to be his own company. That's hard, especially for him. I'm just trying to put him in the forefront, in control of his career.

"We communicate well. He comes to my house. We talk on the phone all the time. He probably understands me better than anybody because I'm talking to him all the time."

But Marbury is doing more than just talking to Barbosa about a new lifestyle. He is buying him a piece of it.

As a rookie, Barbosa is still waiting on his first big paycheck. He's been driving a rental for the past few weeks. But that's about to change. Marbury is buying him an Escalade, a Cadillac-made SUV, that will be delivered once it is outfitted with a top-of-the line sound system.

"I knew he didn't have the money to do it right now," Marbury said. "I'm just helping him. I'm not really buying it for him. Eventually, he'll pay me back. He's got some real game.

"But right now I'm just helping him out, making sure that he only has to worry about basketball."

Without the stick.

Dido - Now don't get me wrong though. He is a very giving man outside the court. It's his leadership skills I question. Writing "All Alone" in ones sneaker does not bode well with me.

NYKBocker, I see what you mean but I think thats just his way of motivating himself. I dont think he is trying to say he is All Alone on the team.

I would be first to say that Marb has not done well as a leader on the court...However, I will also be the first to say that when he had decent talents around him, he proved that he was capable at having success in Phoenix. Hopefully with the help of Larry and a great supporting cast, we will finally see the Marburry that we all believe that he can be...

He has to know the ramifications of his every action. Being a leader means you try to get the best out of your men. Degrading them by letting ALL to see that they are worthless is not a way to go.

No question that Stephon has ALL WORLD talent. It's how you use it that gives you success. A leaderless team is not a team. It is just a group or a set.

I am not hating on Stephon. I just think we need to look for leadership elsewhere. Pat lead by example. Stephon can follow suit. We need an LJ, Doc Rivers or Derek Harper type player to hold the reins and guide this team to success. LB is your general, he needs a captain to drive his team.

NBA guys do this all the time to help rookies out, they let them stay in their houses buy the rookies watches its a nice gesture, but he probably feels bad about getting 17 million dollars a year plus various endorsements, it would be nice if he would help out with those $6.50 beers and $5.00 hotdogs

The presence of Davis on our roster may be just what we needed. Kurt played that role last season, but it wasn't properly used. Larry will find a way to get all of our players to gel and function together. Next season, one of our bigs will assume that role...I am expecting Frye to develop into that type of player; I have noticed that he has a lot of leadership traits...

Antonio Davis took in Al Harrington in their Pacer days. Al actually lived in Anotonio's house for awhile since he was very young and needed guidance.

Stephon is going to step up as a leader on this team this year. Little things like getting suits for the rooks help team comraderie.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!
