EDDY PACT SET TO BE INSURED
By MARC BERMAN

The Bulls claimed last month they did not believe they'd be able to get insurance on a new contract for Eddy Curry — another supposed factor in their decision to trade the 6-11 center instead of re-signing the restricted free agent. Apparently, the Bulls didn't try hard enough.

The Post has learned the Knicks were making strong headway in getting Curry's six-year, $60 million contract insured. The normal NBA contract is insured 80 percent against a career-ending ailment, minus a half-season deductible.

Dr. David Cannom, an L.A. heart specialist from Good Samaritan Hospital who examined Curry on behalf of the Bulls in August, spoke with the Knicks Tuesday.

"My understanding is they were very close to getting insurance," Dr. Cannom told The Post. Dr. Cannom and cardiologists from Cornell and Tufts examined Curry in August and gave him a clean bill of health. The Knicks consulted with Dr. Cannom six weeks ago when they were researching the Curry case.

After the Knicks made the trade Oct. 3, six more doctors reviewed Curry's latest round of heart tests.

The Knicks officially declined comment but indicated Cannom's claim was accurate.

Great news! Yet another tidbit to help stifle the doubting.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I wonder if Pax may have gotten wind of this news early and wanted to continue his feeble attempt to justify a decision that's appearing even more ill-advised as the days pass.

Isiah Thomas, thank you!

Every time Paxson smears Curry, any writer worth his salt should say to him: "If you were so concerned about his health, Jim, why didn't you just waive him?"

Because Paxson would have to answer him, "I'm John, Jim is the other idiot Paxson who gave away Boozer."

even though they lost curry, all trades must be weighed on both sides of the full value of the trade. mike sweetney has already provided tremenous play for them and TT, when he hasnt been hurt, has apparently played well, plus we have to see what exactly they eventually will get off us in the draft.

Now if a trade turns good for them, that doesnt mean it can be just as swell for us, and Curry at 22, healthy should be a staple for us for a good ten years. thats the way trades should go--i dont think the bulls got burnt at all

Lets see how the picks pan out for them.

Then judge the trade in a few years.

But it was excellent for us! If no heart trouble he could have been the overall no 1. pick last summer.

Nor do I and I agree with you. I said in the Sweetney thread that we 100% gave up a good player to get Curry. I dont think we gave up = value. Guys like Curry are a hell of a lot harder to get than Sweetney. There's a reason team blow picks and overpay for these guys. Obviously they feel the risk is worth it.

I think Pax overall did a good job with the trade because he comes away with something that will help him for a player he was losing regardless. I said he's looking pretty dumb because not only has every doc cleared EC to play but now the financial issues are less an issue if he gets insurance.

The Bulls invest 4 years into EC. 3 of which were simply horrible, and during those 3 losing season the consolation prize is getting Curry/Chandler closer to being the star frontcourt players you envisioned when you drafted them. Then after 4 years of working with this kid you trade him for Mike Sweetney. Sorry... but thats just a bad job. I love Sweets, but not only is Curry better and more valuable the Bulls commitment to him just got flushed. Ouch.

really nalod, it is just 1 pick the bulls get, and if the knicks make the playoffs, not a very good pick at that, the next year, they get to flip flop picks with us if they choose to, which is fine with me... with IT drafting we can get a player at 21 that is just as good as a player at 17... I think more of it has to do with how well sweetney does as much as the picks..

So many variables.

First off, not all of Isiahs picks could be great.

Bulls could use the pick very wisely and get a gem, or package it for another player or a higher pick.

In time if the bulls progress, then it did not hurt them, or hurt them bad.

Likewise, eddie can break and we go lotto again this year and they get the next jordan? Many many variables.

I think we did really well, thats good enough for me. I hope Sweets is an allstar! Won't make our deal look any worse! WE got what we needed and wanted WHEN we needed it. Thats the basis of a good trade!

And yeah, I do think Pax-Reiensdorf made a mistake.

This is one reason taking high school kids is not always a good Idea. He underachieved for 3 years due to many reasons like IMATURITY. Bulls then have to pay him big still on his potential. WE can afford to because we have little invested, but the bulls saw the immaturity up close. I think a change of scenary will be huge for this kid at this time of his life, away from his friends, bulls management and the events that led to his having to evaluate his life. This could be big for us.

My point? I forgot. Just babble!

HSers take some time to develop. Especially the big men. Garnett was the only one that was great right away. Howard was nice last year. McGrady took 2-3 years. ONeal took 4 years. It takes time. Curry will spend his best years in NY. That is a HUGE FACTOR. If he went to college this would be his rookie year and is there any doubt he would have been the #1 pick ahead of Bogut? NY got this yars #1 and now he will start playing like it.
