The Knicks entire team -- minus newly acquired Eddy Curry so far -- has been here in Charleston, SC, since October 5 for their annual preseason training in the 843 (though they changed venues one year recently to protest or avoid the Confederate flag bull-jive), and this past Thursday, three of them ate at a small restaurant where I happened to serve them. We'll call them Channing F., David L., and Allan H. to protect their anonymity. They were mad cool and all, and I got the chance, without imposing myself like a chickenhead would-be groupie, to ask David L. why James White transferred from Florida to Cinncinati. Plus I had to defend Allan H.'s alma mater from the derision of the former Arizona student who claimed, "Shoooot, Al, your school ain't been in the top 25 since you left." Mr. H. deferred his rebuttal to silence and smiles, but I caught the comment and pointed out that Vince Yarbrough and them were ranked up there for at least a minute. Oh yeah, and David L. does a pretty good Larry Brown impression: (in a benignly husky voice) "Guys, maybe this sounds a little crazy, but do you think, instead of taking the 10 footer, Channing, maybe you could triple-pivot, move baseline, look for the short elbow screen to your right, and then hit Al outside on the overplay inside or pump fake and look for a cutter to the hoop?"

CLASSIC.
