Pivotal Decisions Tuesday, October 11, 2005 12:40 a.m. ET (9:40 p.m. PT) on ESPN The "Baby Bulls" were the talk of the NBA last season, a strong young nucleus of Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry triggering memories of the Bulls' past glory.
But after a late-season injury sidelined Deng, the team was dealt another huge blow -- a previously unknown heart condition forced the dynamic Curry out of the lineup -- and placed his career and his future in jeopardy. Before signing him to a long-term deal, the Bulls organization asked Curry to take a DNA test to help diagnose his condition. Curry refused, citing privacy issues, triggering a national debate about where a player's privacy ends and team's right to know begins. Despite lingering concerns about his health, Curry was traded to the New York Knicks, a team that did not require a DNA test.
Tonight on OUTSIDE THE LINES, we examine the risks involved in the Curry case: the financial risks of an NBA franchise and the health risks young NBA star. Bob Ley hosts.
Guests include Eddie Johnson: Played 17 seasons in the NBA, radio/TV analyst for the Phoenix Suns Steve Kerr: Played 15 seasons in the NBA, 5-time champion, TNT NBA analyst
