Channing Frye Interview Knicks rookie talks draft, New York, and Larry Brown. by Jon Robinson
October 4, 2005 - In NBA Live 06, Channing Frye is the player I built my Knicks Dynasty around. The kid has a soft touch around the basket, runs the floor extremely well, and excels at tipping in offensive rebounds for quick points.
Then again, these are the same skills that influenced the Knicks to take Frye with the number eight pick in the draft.
Now teamed in the paint with newcomers Eddy Curry and Jerome James to potentially give New Yorkers their most formidable front line since Patrick Ewing turned Starbucks, Larry Brown's rotation down low hopes to lead the Knicks on a run back toward the postseason.
IGN Sports caught up with Frye to ask him about the Knicks, the draft, and what it's like to see himself in NBA Live 06.
IGN Sports: We were just checking out NBA Live 06. What kind of gamer are you?
Channing Frye: I go in there with a full court press, but I'm not much for defense. I like to score, so if we play our game is going to end up 201-200, but I'm going to get the W. I'm averaging 50 points a game when I play as the Knicks.
IGN Sports: You can't beat me. I'll beat you with you.
Channing Frye: [laughs] I first started playing games back in 1989. When I first bought my Nintendo, I stayed up for 24 hours straight. Ever since then I've been really into it. I play Halo a lot, Tiger Woods, Madden and Live. Last year I played a lot of March Madness just so I could beat people as Arizona, but it's good to move on to the Knicks and NBA Live. That's one of the things I've been looking forward to the most. I'm going to go buy a bunch of copies and give them to all my boys.
IGN Sports: What was draft day like for you? You shot up the draft board really fast.
Channing Frye: It was crazy. I felt like it was a blessing. I went in there and worked hard and good things happened. I knew the Knicks were really interested and I had a feeling they were going to pick me if I was still available. That's why I went with number seven for my jersey. It took seven teams to pass on me to get to number eight.
IGN Sports: Is there a lot of added pressure going to a team like New York?
Channing Frye: I love it. I love my teammates, I love the city, I love the fact that we have a new coach, a new team, and I'm excited to play.
IGN Sports: Were you surprised by the addition of Larry Brown?
Channing Frye: Yes and no. I knew the New York Knicks wanted to make changes for the good and I think with the draft class they were looking to go a little younger and more athletic. And I know if the Knicks wanted to get where they want to go, they needed a good coach. Not that Herb Williams wasn't a good coach, but Larry Brown's the best.
IGN Sports: If you had one money move Knicks fans should look out for or attempt in NBA Live, what would it be?
Channing Frye: The hook shot. If you like Tim Duncan's game, you'll like my game. I think Duncan is the best player in the league, and to a point, that's who I like to compare my game to. But I have a lot of work to do. I'm going to work hard to get better, I need to learn from the veterans, and just listen to my coaches. That's the road I need to go.
IGN Sports: What do you think is the biggest adjustment you're going to have to make from college to the NBA?
Channing Frye: Learning the system and simply adjusting to the amount of games that we have to play. Those are the two biggest things, and they're two things that every rookie has to go through.
IGN Sports: It's a lot less taxing to just play 82 games on my Xbox.
Channing Frye: And on the Xbox, I can average 50 points. [laughs]
