The Paxson's

I can't pass any kind of judgement on these guys really. I can't imagine how hard it is to be the GM of a major sports franchise. I do know Isiah doesn't get cut near the slack these two guys are cut.

But WoW, have these two guys been major players in two of the most historic, topical and precedent setting major sports transactions of our time or what?

The Paxon's (que in the Walton's theme song here (the one with the twangy acoustic guitar cut on it).

Part 1

Folks, I'm starting to get a funny feeling about the last part of this vaunted trade so let me apologize about the length of this post in advance.

Although the Bulls and the Knicks have already officially announced the trade there's this little bag of bones over in the corner. In that bag is a reported yet not confirmed rumor that the Knicks were to release Antonio Davis so that the Bulls could resign him...which would be illegal if it was offically announced. Now I read on Realgm that the Knicks may want to keep Davis..although it would be illegal per se to release him so that the Bulls could resign him (ala Payton rules).

Hmm, now this wouldn't surprise me at all because I know Zeke can be a very vindictive kinda person...loyal, caring (he'd probably give the shirt off his back to a friend), yes...but vindictive. All of those battles with Bird and Magic over the years where he wouldn't just stay down and die. He'd be back for more like a little rat terrier or something (hey man, if one of those dogs were to get ahold of the family jewels you'd have a serious problem on your hands)

Phoenix supposedly greased Zeke pretty good from some accounts with the Marbury trade. Then all of a sudden Zeke is like hmm, Q has a problem with his back and I might have to rescind the trade. Phoenix goes oh oh Isiah don't do that (they wanna save the bucks). Isiah, with that pearly white smile says...Okay I tell you what, through in your 21st pick and we'll call it a day. Nate Robinson (steal of the draft imo), Q and Marbury far out value any lost picks and Laydenesque players we don't have anymore.

Part 2

Now here we go last year with Isiah being called every name next to god for being the high bidder...and only bidder I might add ...for the services of one Mr. Jamal Crawford. Paxson, knowing he has the upper hand draws out the situation for months. Even to the point where Isiah is like...look i'm not trying to get over on anybody. Let's let the trade happen. Even Jamal is like man when is this going to end. Is it done already. It was a fiasco. Pax was giving Zeke the business and showing him what an excellent poker player he was....formidable.

Now fast forward one year. Isiah didn't forget the embarrassment of that Paxson transaction. He's like i'ma smile and let him know he played a good game...but we'll meet again. Jamal's probably been over to Isiah's crib who knows how many times and Isiah just knows all the little goodies about the Bulls operation months before the media does (even strange sayings about some kind of DNA test).

Zeke places a call to Curry after letting Jamal know he wants to have a word with him. With Curry's lawyer on the other line Zeke tells him (in Brando's voice)....."Eddy, I have an offer you can't refuse, are you ready to come home?" Before Eddy answers he looks over at his lawyer and says to him..."Leon, i'm ready to go". Rose nods and says..."I understand, what you want is what I want". Zeke says..."alright fella's, here's what we're gonna do".

Fast forward three weeks and Paxson is about to jump someone at the Bulls press conference. Zeke receives a phone call from the NY Media about the possibility of him releasing Davis so that the Bulls can resign him. Zeke, being smart, says I don't know anything about that and it would be in violation of the rules.

Then Zeke thinks to himself. I bet you I can get some kind of concession from Pax. All of sudden the articles on Realgm, NYT etc about the Knicks reconsidering the release of Davis. Interesting

Now of course I know he wouldn't be able to get Sweetney back with that....right. I know i'm tripping..work with me here

Part 3

Folks, I'm starting to get a funny feeling about the last part of this vaunted trade.

Nevertheless, me thinks Isiah is now teaching the young Mr. Paxson just how priceless the family jewels are. So, like Magic, Bird and Jordan before him, Pax has discovered that while he was in a poker game...Zeke was in a street fight.

If your a snake and don't do business fair, you'll get blackballed in the end.

No, I don't believe there was fraud.

Its about leverage. If you got, you use it. If not, you gotta take it!.

just for clarity: If Knicks release AD, he can sign again with the Bulls, there is just a 30 day wait period:

http://proxy.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&id=2121672
Rule: Players who are traded and then waived by their new team cannot sign back with the team that traded them for 30 days (20 days in the offseason). Payton, you'll recall, was dealt from Boston to Atlanta in the Antoine Walker trade-deadline swap in February, only to rejoin the Celtics three days later. Had this rule been in place last season, Payton still would have been eligible for the playoffs after Atlanta released him March 1, but he would have been forced to wait until March 31 to re-sign with Boston.

I could see isiah saying to paxon 'yea, I don't want AD, we're going youth movement' when all along he's thinking, god, I'm going need someone with some rebounding ability and toughness inside, I ain't releasing him. Then, next time he calls paxon, he can just blame larry brown or even say david stern called to make sure there wasn't anything under the table and I can't afford to get messed like McHale & Minny did with joe smith.

Junk, as dramatic as you made the story sound I can get 100% behind the principle. Zeke goes for the throat. I think BOTH the Suns and the Bulls got caught with their pants down and Zeke was happy to oblige in pointing that out.

Did he get shaftedm in the Marbury trade? I never thought so, but The great con job he pulled on PHX to get that 21st pick wwn. Onto Craw, I really don't think he got jobbed at all. But I do think that he was a little pissed with the way Pax drew out a deal that was supposedly done...So guess what? Zeke takes Pax to the cleaners in this deal by doing the same to him...."Ariza? Lee? tell you what Mr. Paxson, you just keep an unhappy 22 yr old franchise player that you have totally bottomed out the market value on...Maybe I'll offer you Jermaine Jackson and Malik Rose at the deadline for Mr. Curry if you don't take this deal now."
