September 23, 2005 -- In a potentially big victory for the MSG Network over YES, MSG is on the verge of signing Kenny Smith to work a portion of the Knicks' TV schedule, NYP TV Sports has learned.

YES had pursued Smith to be its lead analyst on Nets' broadcasts. Smith would have worked 50-60 games for YES.

On MSG, Smith - who will still appear on TNT's popular Thursday NBA studio show - is expected to fill in for regular analyst Walt Frazier on about 20 Knicks games.

"We are currently in negotiations," Smith said through a TNT spokesman.

MSG has impressive alternatives if the Smith deal were to fall through. Network executives have spoken to the highly respected Len Elmore, as well as to former Knick Hubert Davis, who showed potential while filling in on radio last year.

Well Kenny Smith is from Queens and has a good presonality. I think it's great he will be in MSG. He was never affiliated with the Knicks so he can come in and give fresh insight on what's going on with the Knicks.

Tell the truth.....MSG comentary is boring!!! Marv Albert was boring!

Mike Breen is a know it all. Clyde always seems annoyed at Mike breen because Breen always has a point to make but he never played a NBA game and Clyde is one of the 50 greatest players, lol.

I wanna see Gus Johnson get the nod to be the voice of the Knicks. Him and Kenny Smith probably would be an awesome pair. Gus is the man and I feel like he actually cares about the players. He knows alot of the players personally. That is awesome.

Absolutely right. Gus Johnson would be a great choice IMO to at least call some games on MSG. He and Kenny Smith (or Clyde) would be a good match.

I met him at the Garden on Draft night, while he was telling the fans how much he was looking foward to this season. He does seem to really care about this team.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

yeah kenny smith being added on for 20 games is a good thing. he's from here went to school here has won a few rings and can bring in some fresh insight to the knicks commentary. i agree i think gus johnson is good, but i think in a limited role. he's better suited for the radio with his voice. with that said, having mike breen do the games is a luxury. i think he's great and will be an announcer for the knicks for years to come, clyde is clyde so i dont think he dislikse mike at all like enyspree said. he's just out of his mind but in a good way!!! they have a great chemistry and mike breen knows alot about the game. i hate the nets with a passion, however, when nothing is on tv i will tune in to watch a little because of marv. but as far as im concerned mike breen is younger and better. i like the crew moving forward. but by all means this is not a big victory. kenny smith aint that good!!! larry brown healthy for 5 years would be a big vicotry...
What happened to Travis Knight? What a waste!

I love the Jet. He and Steve Snapper Jones are 2 of my favorites. Snapper and Walton are hysterical together.

I can't stand Breen. Guy rubs me totally the wrong way.

I like Gus but only in limited doses. He's a little too upbeat and cheerleadery.

I love Clyde.

But of course by far my favorite is Marv Albert. He and Johnny Hoops were the greatest cmombo. The fact that they turned out to be a small-time crook and a sexual deviant only adds to ther appeal

Snapper and Walton are a riot. They sound like two kids in a playground.

Marv Albert has had some good partners over the years.....That old orlando coach Matt something (I can't remember his name for nothing), and his many years with Fratello were pretty memorable.

Clyde and Gus to me are the best combo. They seemed to have alot of fun and probably hang out at "Flashdancers" on 33rd street after the game, lol.

I like Al Trawig and Johnny Hoops when they get together on that rare occation. They give off the same vibe that Gus and Clyde give.

Well anyways....go to have Kenny Smith on MSG. Now all they gotta do is fire Bill Dauthtry....he is a dick head. I can't stand him. His mother must work for MSG or something....dude is the worst.

I actually love Breen. He's a true pro. Loved him on WFAN in just about everything he did. He's actually a very funny guy too, if you caught him on Imus. Gus is a very energetic guy and I like that. It keeps you up and into the game. In truth I miss Marv :( I as many in NY grew up listening to him and he is the voice of the Knicks period. At least we still have Clyde :) He's like Phil Rizzuto. You can't get rid of Clyde.
