In previous years, September was the time for teams already in the playoffs to evaluate their players and plan their strategies for the postseason. There were maybe a couple of teams still battling to make the postseason. But come September, many divisions were already won and the excitement about the month prior to the start of the Playoffs was almost nonexistant. Until now.

One of the most exciting finishes for an ending season is taking place in Baseball, as many teams in both leagues are still in contention for both divisions or the wild card. Some teams are faltering; others are red-hot. Division leads are vanishing. Players are watching the scoreboard constantly. Fans are always on the edge of their seats.

Welcome to the 2005 MLB Playoffs.

In the National League, Saint Louis has already clinched the Central Division. Atlanta and San Diego lead their respective divisions, but Philadelphia and San Francisco are making a final push. Houston leads the Wild Card but the Philies are very close to them and Florida isn't out of it yet.

But is in the American League where the exciting stories are. The White Sox have seen their big lead shrink dramatically, as now the red-hot Wild Card leaders Indians are within striking distance. The Angels lead the West, but the A's are right behind them. And in the East, the playoffs between the Yankees and the Red Sox have already started, both teams extremely close. The Wild Card is still in play for any of those teams.

Tonight in the NL, Florida suffered a big blow as they lost to the Mets, losing ground on the chase for the Wild Card.

In the AL, The A's lost while the Angels won. They lead the division by 2 games. Cleveland won the series against the White Sox, staying hot and leaving only 2.5 games away from them. In the East, the Big Unit had a strong outing while the Devil Rays made a comeback against the Red Sox. This left the Yankees in first place after a couple of months.

But its all far from over...

Yesterday, the Philies defeated NL East-leading Atlanta to trim their lead down to 4 games. Ex-Yankee John Lieber pitched 8 scoreless innings for Philadelphia, who are just two games back from Houston in the Wild Card hunt. The red-hot Astros won for the third straight game to keep their lead. The Marlins, also in the hunt, got another great outing from Dontrelle Willis (22-9) as they kept their chances alive with a 2-1 win over the Mets. In the NL West, San Francisco wasted a chance to gain some ground on San Diego with their 2-0 loss to Washington. San Diego lost 4-2 to Colorado.

In the American League, the Angels ran their winning streak to 6 as they increased their AL West lead over idle Oakland to three games. In the AL Central, the historic collapse continues for the Chicago White Sox as they lost again, this time to Minnesotta in extra innings. Cleveland is still one of the hottest teams in the league, again defeating the woeful Royals. Once of 15 games, the White Sox's lead is down to just 1.5 games.

Yesterday the Yankees got a big boost from a player returning from an injury. Mike Mussina, out for three weeks, came back and had a strong and encouraging outing, pitching six innings of four hit, one unearned run baseball. Jorge Posada had two big homeruns for the Yanks, who had to hold on for the win after their middle relief turned a 7-1 laugher into a close 7-6 game in the ninth. With the win, the Yanks have a 1 game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East.
