Nationals | Giants
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The pitch to Barry Bonds was right where John Patterson wanted it, a cut fastball that dipped inside, meant to be a ball that might serve to push the San Francisco Giants slugger a tad off the plate.

And then, in a blink, Bonds whipped his bat, driving the ball over the right-field wall. The two-run shot, his 707th career homer and fourth in four games, came in the first inning Wednesday night and started the Giants on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.

"I don't know how he hit it. We were all talking about it after we came into the dugout," Patterson said. "It's like fighting Ali. You make one little mistake, and he makes you pay. You realize, at some point, Barry's going to get you."

And with Bonds back in the lineup after missing the season's first 142 games, the Giants have won five straight games to cling to an outside chance of catching the NL West-leading San Diego Padres. San Diego beat Colorado 5-2 to keep its five-game lead.

"He can change the game," said Giants starter Brad Hennessey (5-8), who won for the first time in 10 outings. "We've got a shot still, I think."

The right-hander gave up one run and three hits over 7 2/3 innings, striking out four, and at one point retired 15 consecutive batters, looking little like a pitcher who was 0-5 with a 5.55 ERA since July 28.

He also doubled and homered, lining a solo shot to left on the first pitch of the seventh inning.

"He's a tough kid," manager Felipe Alou said. "We're staying with him."

After Scott Eyre relieved Hennessey to finish the eighth, then put two runners on in the ninth, Armando Benitez struck out the last two batters for his 18th save.

The Nationals lost their fourth in a row, and manager Frank Robinson spoke before the game of wanting to avoid a last-place finish. Coupled with Houston's 12-8 win over Pittsburgh, Washington's loss dropped it six games behind the Astros in the NL wild-card standings with 10 games left.

"It would take a miracle at this point," said Patterson (9-6), who allowed five runs and 10 hits in seven innings. He had nine strikeouts, including Bonds twice.

So looking ahead to Thursday, the one bit of good news for the Nationals? Bonds won't start because it's an afternoon game.

"He was really tired," said Alou, who removed Bonds after he was intentionally walked in the seventh. "I won't change my mind. He's really sore."

San Francisco's surge has coincided with last week's return of Bonds, who had three offseason knee operations. The team is 6-1 in his starts, and Bonds is hitting .318 (7-for-22) with four homers and six RBI.

"Barry came back and really makes this whole team a lot better," Giants outfielder Moises Alou said. "It's a whole different game."

There were fewer boos and disparaging signs directed Bonds' way Wednesday than Tuesday, his first road game of the year. But he still heard plenty of jeers, including when he caught Brad Wilkerson's shallow fly leading off the bottom of the first.

Bonds, who left the stadium by the time the visiting clubhouse opened after the game, moved within seven homers of tying Babe Ruth for second on the career list behind Hank Aaron's 755.

Can Bonds reach Ruth's total of 714 this year, even though San Francisco has only 11 games left -- and he won't start all of them?

"It's not a task beyond his reach," said Robinson, sixth in history with 586 homers. "He is capable of doing that."

Ruth hit home runs more often (1 per 14.9 plate appearances to Bonds's 16.5)
Babe Ruth played when Ballparks were often an extra 20 to 60 feet or more from the power alleys to center field.
If Ruth were playing today, his home run count would be closer to 800.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Those plate appearances per HR is a bit decieving due to Bonds walk ratio.

walks count as a plate appearance. I have a problem with Bonds and the HRs. The bottom line is he juiced, and his numbers are reflected in it.

A couple things:
prior to 2000, Bonds hit three homers longer than 450 feet; in the last five years, he has hit 26

Also, after 2000 his slg% magically went up about 200 points over his career average.

His numbers are so tainted its not even funny. Whats sad about it is Bonds is easily one of the most gifted and talented players to ever set foot on a field. Its a shame he's tainted his own greatness with the juice. The guy was a hall of famer BEFORE 2000 when it became painfully obvious he was on something.

Funny how this guys is a hero and none of the steroid talk is directed towards him. Dude was on something. I think that was painfully obvious. Dude was practically going to piss on himself when those congressmen were grilling him. He definately juiced.

Bonds has been getting grief ever since he started to pressure Ruths two hr records. Bonds is probably juicing that's why he has been rehabing all year to avoid being tested to allow his system to clean out. That's my opinion.

Big Mark needs to be under the microscope too by the same people on Bonds jock.

I disagree 100%

Bonds has been implicated with steriods just as Giambi was. The extent of the evidence I dont know, only that he like Jason took illegal substances that were non detectable.

Mark took andro. Its banned now but was perfectly legal and over the counter at the time.

Mcguire left a 12 million dollar contract and retired.

His reemergence after injuries was incredible! Sosa I think also gets the bashed. So we got one white, one Latin american, and one afro american all juiced and benefited. These are all Bonds records and he is the one chasing them.

Lets put the race thing in perspective, its not Ruths record, but Hank Aarons!

I think Bonds should back off if he has any chance of ever being found out.

Baseball has done a shamefull job of this.

Lets be real too, bonds is an incredible talent, but the question is how much has the roids helped him?

If this guy really juiced up, he's not going to live another 20 years!

No one is guranteed to live for the next 5 minutes. Still Barry juiced and so did Big Mark (andro my ass!) Sosa, Giambi, etc.....No one is under more flack than Bonds. Giambi admitted it but once his bat heated back up people forgot about him. He should take a piss test before every game, especially after the huge July and August he had.

would ruth have the same record if the league was intergrated? there were players in the negro league that were amazing. as a matter of fact, jackie robinson was average in that league ( god bless his soul though).

Good point!!!

Dark time in our country......dark meaning the Negro Leagues don't seem to matter when talking baseball history. There definately were way better players in the Negro Leagues than Jackie with no disrespect to his legacy.

Like I said in a earlier post.....

I dont think Giambi is juicing any more. Nor do I think Bonds is. Both have had significant layoffs to get their strength back after the withdraw. Sosa corked a bat but never failed a test, so what can you say? NFL players are HUGE, yet that sport has the toughest testing out there.

Its not fair to lump in Sosa and Mac with the guys that DID get caught just because they are big meatheads.

Nalod, you cant convince me in a 100 years its got anything to do with black/white/hispanic. Bonds is an *******, plain and simple. THATS why people cant stand him, he's a walking ball of unpleasantness. If Griffy Jr. was chasing Hank people would embrace him. People loved Mac because he cried and respected the game and was cuddley.

my guess is Ruth would have been great in any era and any league. Remember he was as dominating a pitcher as a hitter. The thing with Ruth was how insane the gap was between him and other players. Remember he outhomered other TEAMS.

Hey, I played on a Negro team once

Bonds is a weasel and cheated, that cannot be argued at all.

The fact that Ruth was naturally better than Bonds at hitting, and was also one of the game's most dominant pitchers (he had the record until Whitey Ford broke it for most scoreless innings in a WS) means he's the GOAT.

End of debate.
