Basically I am in favor of artists being compensated when others are profiting from the work, or it dilutes the body of work.
I did a brief stint on Kazaa but removed it and forbid my children form taking music without compensation. Im ok with Internet radio, or other forums to listen, as one would on radio, but not able to make and duplicate the music. Satalite radio is one type that seems to gain approval from all.
In this case, its artwork.
I am not an artist, but I have had my work taken and used without compensation and I have to agree it sucks.
I do think the record companies have been slow to get with the times but they are coming around. Free market drives the markets but there must be respect to the artist.
I think the leter From Mr. Larson was a nice effort to explain himself before the lawyers swoop in and offends his supporters. In a way, those who put up those websites are perhaps innocently providing exposure but in reality are riding the backs of someones efforts.

I like Larson, but less so after reading his letter. I have one piece of advice to him: Get over yourself.
If you want to be paid for your work and to protect it from being distributed for free, that's fine. But this is a commercial issue, not one of artistic integrity. For someone who's so funny, you sure take yourself seriously.

It is a nice way of saying it is an commercial issue.
I take business very personal when I am expressing myself thru my work and don't like my intelectual property being used for others to profit. It take it very personal when food, or tuition is taken awayfrom my kids.
It was nice for him to take a personal touch rather than the lawyers at first attempt.
Although somehow I imagine that most folks posting a far side pic are just taking a single image for the purpose of a joke - not making a profit or cutting into Larson's publisher's take... I am a professional artist, and I understand the difference between plagiarism and flattery...Stuff like this would be a case-by-case, if I were the artist in question, but hey - some folks are more 'sensitive' than others, like those people who can't be touched on the subway... Anyway, Bernard has a point, as does Nalod.
