Kareem want thru an unusual time. The high expectations of a 7 foot teen held in high esteem for his basketball but looked at as a freak during the turbulent racially charged 1960s had a big effect on his outlook on life and how others looked at him.

This guy went thru hell at time and was likely clinically depressed AND suffered migranes!

bit of history, the Nets held his draft rights and were bidding with Milwaukee after he was drafted. Him and his agent set a silly deadline for the bids. The nets needed the ABA to help fund him, which could have really made the league more legit much earlier, the papers and the bid were late arriving at the lawyers due to traffic!

It was the higher bid, and he wanted to play in NY, but.........rules are rules!

a few books abou the ABA are good reading by the way, an HBO documentry, and the remembertheaba.com site are excellent reads.

Nalod, I didn't know that about Kareem and the Nets. That would have been crazy. Kareem and Doc???? Of course, I suspect the real reason he didn't sign with them is he knew he couldn't beat out the Whopper!

He really was regarded as a freak coming out of Power Memorial. It was so boneheaded of the NCAA to ban dunking in anticipation of his coming to college. That totally intensified the view that Kareem was a physical freak with unfair advantage over the competition. I was always impressed with him, his knowledge of jazz and history and political/cultural perspectives, but he was so guarded and introverted to the point of alientating almost everyone connected with the league.

One thing I always fouind funny, after all tlhe hysteria re: Kareem's height (and race? hmmmm. . . .), Walton comes to UCLA and insists on being listed at 6'11". Now i don't know how many of you guys remember seeing Waltonstand next to Parish when they played together, but Walton towered over him. I've since seen a lot of accounts that he was around 7'3".

Marv,

I doubt the nets could have afforded both "Alcinder" and the Doc at the same time.

Rememember, Rick Barry played 2 years with the nets! An inside-outside presence like that would have been even more deadly! But again, who knows if Rick would have been a part of that team.

I have never seen any basketball player have the impact as a rookie that Karem had on the Bucks.
