Cavaliers' money well spent signing much-needed Jones Friday, September 09, 2005 Roger Brown Plain Dealer Columnist
Give Cavs management due credit for putting aside ego and wisely agreeing to bend enough to sign former Miami guard Damon Jones, a bona fide talent, to a free-agent deal.
Jones' four-year, $16.1 million contract, in both years and dollars, is significantly better than the original below-market value offer made weeks ago by the Cavs, who kept dropping hints they could: 1. easily bypass Jones and acquire an acceptable, cheaper point guard (Steve Blake, Dan Dickau, Jannero Pargo, etc.); or 2. stick with veteran holdover Eric Snow.
Also, the Cavs agreed to guarantee Jones' entire four-year deal - a concession they expressed no desire at all to make during early talks.
Now that the Cavs
have signed Jones, it'll be interesting to see whether Knicks head coach Larry Brown steps up lobbying to acquire Snow, who played for him in Philadelphia from 1998 to 2003. Shortly after Snow had his notorious run-in with Paul Silas last year during a game against the Pistons - which resulted in Snow being ordered to the locker room - Brown badgered Pistons General Manager Joe Dumars to acquire Snow as a backup. But Dumars reportedly turned down Brown in firm fashion, citing Snow's huge salary.
