New York, New York, big city of dreams. NBA Live dreams to be exact.
by Jon Robinson
September 2, 2005 - I cheated.

Sorry Golden State, I have something to confess. I know I claim I've always loved the Warriors, and it's true. But even as an obsessed Warriors fan since the days of Joe Barry Carroll, I've been known to stray from time to time. It got so bad once, I almost left the Warriors all together for another team…the New York Knicks.

John Starks dunking left-handed on the Bulls. Greg Anthony brawling the Suns in street clothes. Patrick Ewing swatting shots into the crowd. Anthony Mason throwing up some of the ugliest free throws the NBA has ever witnessed. Hell, if Charles Smith could make a shot from two feet away (if that), this team was winning a championship. I guess it just wasn't meant to be, and like the Warriors, the Knicks left me with a broken heart.

That's what I get for cheating.

And ever since Ewing retired, ever since I had to look at Starks in a Jazz jersey, I've still tried to follow the Knicks as a second-favorite to the Warriors (I must like to torture myself). It's like an affair I can't end, even if I know this thing is turning bad in a boiled bunny sort of way. I mean, when the NBA comes up with something called "The Allan Houston Rule" then you don't even use the rule to get rid of Allan Houston, you know you've got some issues.

That's why I'm taking over the team. Give me your tired, your weak, your bad contracts. Give me your greedy players, your Starbury and your rookies.

Forget Larry Brown, it's up to me to transform this team into a winner.

And actually, it's those three rookies that are going to factor heavily into whether these Knicks turn into a team of winners, or just another team cashing guaranteed checks. In NBA Live 06, there's a new feature called Player Evolution where you can take your young players and turn them into Freestyle Superstars. So if I take a player like Nate Robinson and have him work with an Assistant Coach who specializes in guards, have him work on his hops with the trainer, I can eventually mold his skills to make him a Playmaker or even a High Flyer (Nate is the next Spud Webb, by the way, just wait for this year's dunk contest).

So the plan is to turn my young lineup into a team of Superstars, adding them to Starbury and a few others worth keeping, then using that foundation to win a championship.

So here I am, first day on the job and as the Knicks new GM (thanks for leaving me in salary cap hell, Isiah!), my first order of business is to hire an Assistant Coach, Scout, and Trainer. The owner tells me I have a budget of just over 2 mil to split between them, then reminds me to balance skills versus cost. If only he would've told that to Isiah, I wouldn't be in this mess.

Fishy would love this...here is his account of his first game:

Quote
When I play my first game against the Celtics, however, I realize that this Knicks team isn't so bad in a videogame. Marbury dominates the action as an outside scorer, Crawford is also an outside scorer, and Q is a shooter. Not bad. I decide to replace Sweetney with Frye to add a little height on the inside and play along James at center. James is only rated a 57 overall and is the starting center? Ouch.

After the first half, I notice that Q just doesn't knock them down from the outside with the consistency I'm looking for, so I go small. I play Nate Robinson at the 1, Stephon at the 2, and Crawford at the 3 alongside Frye and James.

Nate Robinson starts his first game by crossing over Marcus Banks straight to the ground, then busta a wide-open three. Welcome to the NBA.

I notice that Jerome James isn't really doing anything for my team, so I go with David Lee at the 4 and slide Frye up to the 5. Now I have three rookies, Marbury and Crawford. Talk about a young lineup.

David Lee's first shot is a brick, but his next touch results in a gorilla slam on two Celtics. Remember Lee in high school? If you don't, the kid won the McDonald's All American Slam Dunk contest, and he's eligible for the dunk contest in Live as well.

The Knicks end up winning the game 92-84, and my rookies play well despite the fact Frye almost fouled out. Robinson scores 18, Lee scores 10, and Frye adds 8 to go along with 3 blocks.

Here is his next game against the bucks...(sorry if you don't care about this stuff, I love it)

QUOTE
My next game is against the Bucks and I put Q and James back in the starting lineup and I think they took the hint. Q hits his first four three pointers, James blocks three shots in a row down low, and the Knicks lineup is now in a battle for playing time. Unfortunately for the Knicks and Channing Frye, however, the big man goes down with an injury after being hammered down low by fellow rookie Andrew Bogut.

I easily beat the Bucks, but now Frye is going to be slowed down for the near future with a sore toe. He won't miss any time, but his performance will be affected. I decide to let him sit out so he can recover quicker, then I assign my assistant coach to work with Nate Robinson on his athletics. I want to see him fly in the coming years as my point guard. Once Frye is healthy, I'm going to assign my coach to work on his inside defense, then I'll move on to working with David Lee.

Speaking of Lee, in game three I give him Frye's starting spot and the kid goes off, earning player of the game honors as the Knicks squeak one out in the final minutes capped off by an alley-oop from Robinson to Lee, followed by a Robinson steal and slam over Baron Davis. Robinson is definitely the spark plug I was hoping for as just like real life, the kid just brings an aura of energy and excitement around with him onto the floor and really gets the speed of the game turned up a notch.

Just think what he's going to be like in my Dynasty next season as my assistant coach continues to work with him and I turn him into a Superstar.

Q continues to bust from behind the arc and has earned his spot back in the lineup. Crawford is having a rough time out there, though, so he's spending more and more time on the bench. Might be time for a trade.

I check the Freestyle Superstar Type screen and notice that both Crawford and Starbury can be either Outside Scorers or Playmakers, but only Starbury can be an Outside Stopper on D. This game is all about playing D. I would love to trade Crawford for another Stopper, maybe someone like Iguodala on the 76ers. They made AI Version 2.0 one seriously bad M-Fer in this game, and I would love to have him on my team, so I throw Crawford's name out there as trade bait and wait for a bite.

In the meantime, Frye's toe is feeling better, so I send him to work with the coach on his defense for four weeks of intensive study. I notice that Nate Robinson improved by one attribute point in the area of FG shooting in his one week of training, so hopefully Frye can earn some additional marks in shot blocking by training with my defensive specialist.

The Knicks go on to win their fourth game in a row against the Blazers, but the 76ers aren't interested in giving up AI Version 2.0 for Crawford and a 1st. Damn. Oh well, looks like I'll keep playing with my young cats and alternate Crawford and Robinson when I need a spark.

Only 78 more games in my season. At this rate I'll be done by the time Live Next Gen ships. I might need to start simulating some games while maintaining the workouts for my young guys.

I might be 60 mil in the hole, but I have hope, and for a Knicks fan, that's all I can ask at this point.

Good Post, and those Live '06 pics look better than ever.
I like that Player Evolution feature. I see where that could be lots of fun.

...and yeah, N8 will win the next Dunk Contest.
