Scott Layden was one of the better GMS in the league. His role in Utah is much different than in NY--we have NO idea what madate the guy was under in NY--Im sure the mandate was to make the playoffs and he didnt have the personality to say otherwise and tried to go with gus who got him there before. Problem is they were just role players around Malone and Stockton. IF Mcdyess knee did not blow up, Isiah Thomas would not be here. If Channing frye turns into Karl Malone, when Nate Robinson turns into John Stockton, when Q Rick plays like Jeff Hornaceck, when Trevor Ariza plays like Andrei Kirilenko, let me know. Otherwise, Layden ;s body of work as a player personell director for the Jazz trumps a lot of guys. His personality, his demeanor-its not for NY, Isiah definitely is. isiah deserves time here, but these fantasies of comparing Isiah --yes to Scott Layden dont go to far.
Briggs, I think its fair to say that Layden was one of the better talent evaluators. he ran a good draft, but had help from Frank Layden on that end in Utah. But as a GM, he was pretty bad. You leave out the fact that Utah never could get a third piece to get StocktonMalone over the hump. He did a horrible job in New York. The Houston trade and even the Ewing move may have been beyond his power, but even then, the Shandon/Eisley contracts are inexplicable. The Weatherspoon signing was criminal. I screamed when I saw that. The Spree handling was poor. The Dyess trade had disaster written all over it from day one. How would this team look with Camby and Nene or Camby and Amare?
Perhaps most damning, Layden never used his one strength, the draft, while in New York. If Layden gets a cop-out that he was "under a mandate" to make the playoffs, why doesn't Zeke get the same slack? He's at least convinced Dolan about the need to add young talent through the draft.
