NEW YORK, August 17, 2005 -- Less than 48 hours after the Knicks used the NBA’s amnesty provision on veteran forward Jerome Williams, the popular “Junk Yard Dog” announced he was calling it a playing career to pursue other interests. Williams, whose intensity and effort made him a fan favorite throughout the league, played in 587 games over nine seasons, averaging 6.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
“My days as the ‘JYD’ on the court as an NBA player are over, but I am looking forward to continuing all my offcourt work and keeping a promise to the kids of New York,” Williams said. Williams met with Isiah Thomas Wednesday morning at the team offices in New York and the two discussed options for the veteran forward to keep him involved with the team. In addition to doing some scouting work and learning the business side of basketball, Williams will pick up where he left off with MSG Network in the spring, working on a broadcasting career.

He will also expand his community efforts and the extensive programs of his foundation (which he runs with his brother Johnnie), reaching out to kids of all ages and holding seminars using rap music to extoll the virtues of being a positive role model. “I made a promise to the kids of New York last spring that I would be back, and I do not want to let them down,” he added. The Williams brothers brought their motivational program to New York late in the season and into the summer, and will continue to run it here as well as in Toronto, Detroit and other cities. Williams is also producing a motivational CD which will be out this fall.

If that will not be enough for the Georgetown graduate, he will continue to grow his Brooklyn-based business “212 Motoring,” which customizes and details cars.

Williams added that he would not have retired had the amnesty clause not been used, and that he is healthy enough to have received a few offers from teams, which he instructed his agent, Lon Babby, to respectfully decline.

Seems like for New Yorkers, the bark of the JYD may be even louder and more effective in retirement than it was during his nine NBA seasons
I welcome the knicks youth movment its refreshing to see players without pig cartelege in there knee playing for us.

Wow, poor JYD, I cant believe he retired, it seems like his heart was ripped out of him since the Knicks cut him. Oh well, he's making a ton of money for doing nothing. Best of luck to Jerome.

Now that more details have come out about JYD's condition, go back and revisit the official thread announcing him being waived. Funny. It's a study is 'jumping the gun 101''

has the 3rd remaining year left on JYD's deal been proven to be a mutual option rather than as a team option as was originally thought? if not, then it still makes more sense to waive Shandon or Mo Taylor & reap more savings, whether JYD were to retire or not...where is the verified source that proves JYD's contract has a 3rd mutual option year? anyone know?

personally i would have rather had JYD rehabbing on the Knick's roster than having Mo Taylor taking up space & minutes away from Mike Sweetney...this is Sweetney's year to make it or break it in my eyes, & judging from Channing Frye's performance in the summer leagues, it looks like he'd be better suited to play the PF as well...so that creates an even bigger glut at the PF spot...JYD can play the SF as well so i don't see how waiving him makes the most sense until that 3rd year question is definitively answered.

He would have lingered into oblivion. I don't believe he would have retired. And as said, that medical retirement takes a few years. This is a good deal for him!

Give it up TMS...The 3rd year was obviously mutual, he wasn't going to retire and MoT is a better option off the bench.

It's time to admit you didn't have any idea what you were griping about and now you are grasping for something you can be mad about, when in all actuality, the knicks actually are on the verge of making a series of the smartest moves in recent memory, possibly saving the team near $80 million AND obtaining either a trade exception OR we have a 3 point shooting marksmen off the bench in Houston.

But, it wasn't the end of the world, the garden isn't going to explode, there aren't going to be more STUPID moves AND dropping shandon wasn't the smart thing to do.

Give it up, your beginning to embarrass yourself.

Now it's time for the naysaying end of the world anti zeke's to start name calling (posting gay robots) and making stupid statements (you've got you're head up isiah's ass) and giving up the argument to be dicks until they can find something else to complain about for no reason without any facts.

While it was an exhilirating (spelled wrong I know) day of back and forths, as the facts slowly come out day after day, I think it's time to stop being a ...

There, I feel better...OK Isles, TMS, sim, boobs, wait, boobs and I are seeing eye to eye these days, so not boobs, but definitely fish, he was pulling out GM 101 and explaining it like it was, let me have it with the personal assaults...I'm going to bed now, so I won't be able to read them anyway.

All you guys had to do is remain calm and wait for the facts...or atleast hope for the best.

it's a new era fellas, live with it. The knicks are on their way back to the championship game (not necessarily a trophy, but the game nonetheless).

btw, rv, read up on the link in my signature before you call me a complainer...maybe you'll learn something.

What's a mutual option? I'm not aware of that type of contract option
