apparently, a player retires and insurance pays 80% of it, we get to use 1/2 of the salary or MLE (whichever is smaller) to sign a player.

And they still do. They want the exception gained from his retirement with an active contract.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Whether he retires and they get this exemption or if he plays decently off the bench, it is a win-win. Either way it makes sense not to waive him. Or at the very least you begin to understand the logic behind it.

Yeah, that and we'll have a $20MM contract to trade next offseason.

if he retires, we can't trade the contract.

Do we get an MLE (which can be used to sign the small pool of remaining FAs) or do we get a trade exception (which can be used to help make salaries match in trades but has no bearing on free agent signings)?

Can't we? Terrell Brandon's contract was traded as part of the Spree/KVH trade after he retired due to injury, right? Wouldn't the same situation apply here?

Even if the CBA wasn't changed, Terrell hadn't yet retired as I seem to recall.

Wasn't Jamal Mashburn's contract traded too?

Jamal wasnt retired. Either way we have Penny and T Thomas on our roster. Large contracts are not easy to move. Id rather have the expiring 7 to 9 mil than a 20 mil player.

It would do us far better if he retired, but he wont. He thinks God will fix his knee but he's so wrong. I want to boo him.

Why didn't they just let JYD retire instead of using the "Allan Houston Rule" to waive him?

That's what I was wondering also. If he was in fact retiring, IT should have used it on Shandon's contract to save even more money.
