Keep in mind that if Houston cannot play a significant part of the season due to injury and retires an injury exemption of up to 50% of salary is a possibility. I think this, combined w. insurance picking up 75% of salary makes Dolan perhaps smarter than he appears on the surface. He also looks like a good guy putting Houston before money. This may be a stroke of genious if it works out right...lots of thing have to happen just right though.

What I don't really understand is why JYD and not Shandon A. I believe another poster was right that the 3rd year on JYD's deal is a team option so the money was virtually equal. Cutting JYD does open a roster spot (Diop perhaps) but JYD is a great guy to have on the bench...not going to complain w. 0 minutes.

wow that would mean around $1omil to spend on a free agent! and that could actually be someone who is worth it for a change! not using the Amnesty on H20 was definitely worth the gamble!

As I have posted, that is the only way this decision makes sense. We can only hope that Dolan has an under the table deal with Houston to retire. The problem is that, at least judging by Houston's public statments, he seems determined not to retire.

To this point, there is no evidence that the words smart and Dolan should be used in the same sentence.

HOU: I'LL RETIRE, IF ...

By MARC BERMAN

August 16, 2005 -- Allan Houston yesterday confirmed The Post's report he'll retire soon after the season opener if he's not healthy enough to compete.

It was those words to James Dolan, and Larry Brown's support, that swayed the Knicks into giving Houston and his arthritic knees one last crack at training camp.

The Knicks could have saved $39.8M in luxury tax by waiving Houston, but stand to save much more if he files for medical retirement.

"I communicated with the Knicks I plan on being back," Houston said. "But if I can't get back to the level where I want to get back, I would consider retiring. I felt there was a good chance of me remaining here after that conversation. . . . I was honest in saying if I can't, it's time for me. But I'm believing I can."

Houston, who's doing on-court drills, still can't say if he'll be ready to participate fully in the Knicks' first practice Oct. 5.

"I know right now I'm doing more than I've been able to do in a while," he said. "I can't say I'll be there Day 1, but it may be sooner. Just because I haven't been playing for a while doesn't mean my career's over."

Actually, the injury exception is only for the MLE (well the rule is, half the players salary or the MLE, whichever is less. it can also be used in a trade. The Knicks got one for McDyess if you recall, but never used it. Here's the rule:

DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team which is over the cap to acquire a replacement for a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of the season. This exception can also be granted in the event of a player's death. This exception can only be used to acquire one player. The maximum salary for the replacement player is 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less. Approval from the league (based on a determination by an NBA-designated physician) is required for this exception to be used. This exception can be used to sign a free agent, or to create room to accept a salary in trade. When used for trade, it is treated in a similar fashion to the traded player exception. If a team is under the salary cap by more than the combined amount of their exceptions, or drops below the cap by more than the combined amount of their exceptions after receiving this exception, then they lose this exception. If a team is under the salary cap and has this exception available to use, then it is included in their team salary.

If a player is disabled between July 1 and November 30, the team must acquire the replacement player within 45 days. If the player is disabled between December 1 and June 30, and the physician determines that the player will be out the entire following season as well, then the team has until October 1 to sign a replacement. If the disabled player comes back sooner than expected, then he may be activated immediately, and the replacement player (or exception, if it hasn't been used yet) is not affected.

This is all fine and makes perfect sense. While we can all slam on the news, its important to digest and speculate the big picture.

I said last nite that I think its cool to be loyal to the players and give them the dignity of choice. While there will be the Carlo boozers (Sheet, it was for 30 million MORE!) its good to see our team hold to their word.

IN the end, taking the high road always comes out the winning end!

this exception is worth even more than an expiring contract, because it's basically the equivalent of taking a player off someone's hands for free. It could definitely come in handy around the trading deadline if Houston retires - but can it be packaged with other players?
