everybody is reporting that we saved $21.3 mil on jyd for 3 years.
but according to hoopshype salary page, jyd as a TEAM option for the 3rd year so the 1st two years total $12.5.

which one is it?

there's a big difference there. and if the 3rd year is NOT a team option, then i understand why he was picked.

cap:
faction 1 : who cares, it ain't my money.
faction 2 : we have to get to cap manageability b/c we're stuck moving big contract for big contract.

isiah:
faction 1 : he's AWESOME and i like my kool-aid orange and blue.
faction 2 : he's mediocre and is making one good move and follows it up with a questionable one.

But dj, the amnesty clause is not about managing the cap--it's meant to be a gift to owners should they choose to take advantage of it. Dolan did take advantage of it even if he didn't save as much as he could have.

Whatever it is, cutting Houston would have saved a lot more. That's why the decision was so idiotic.

Why are you so concerned about the size of Dolan's bank account? If Dolan was only out to make a profit people would be criticizing him about not being committed to winning.

Once Houston breakdown and is forced to retire does his money come off the cap? I don't think it does because we're we paying LJ and Longely long after they retired? if so the only good thing about him retiring is getting an injury exception.

I think I answered that question yesterday. His decisions are reflective of a process that is designed to gain the revenue from making the playoffs every year and losing in the first or second round as opposed to a process that emphasizes the long view, i.e., one that may cause the team to miss the playoffs for a year or two, but is more likely to put them in a position to win championships.

I'm a fan, not a stockholder.

His money does NOT come off the cap, just like how Luc Longley and Larry Johnson didn't come off the cap when they retired. Insurance pays like 75% of Houston's paycheck, but it still counts against the cap. Again, it's basically a pure financial thing for Dolan, but I think he would still have to pay the luxery tax since it counts against the cap. Hence, it's not as beneficial as people think. It basically gives the team a roster spot and clears a space in the backcourt glut.

You do get an injury exception if a player retires due to career ending injury thouh. We got one for LJ and never used it, ouch, Layden I hope you burn in hell.

07/18/01: Jerome Williams signed a 7-year, $40.8 million contract with Toronto. There is a mutual opt-out for the 7th season

Got this from JYD's player card on realgm. If true, and the opt-out is mutual, both JYD and the Knicks would need to exercise it to get out of the contract. And of course JYD would never do that. So I guess the savings really is $21mm. Feel better now?

An exemption allows a team over the cap to go further over the cap.

The knicks did not use it then as they appeared to begin to cut costs.

The knicks under Isiah are buying their way out of cap hell!

Layden and Isiah are employees to facilitate the desires and direction of mills (the president) and its owner (dolan).

Layden and Isiah don't decide what to do, the facilitate the directive. Isiah does not spend all this money unless the owner decides.

Isiah does not have all the power, nor should he get all the glory. Give Dolan some credit when some things work.

Isiah was not prohetic by bringing hin Marbs, dolan took on huge salary and facilited a trade that was Laydens creation. Dolan needed a better more visiable GM. He FIRED LAYDEN, he HIRED Isiah!

And if this all plays out, Allan will retire, and ISIAH will look like a genious! Thats cool, but lets give credit where it is do!

I think it must be a player option. Remember, Hoopshype and the like are just GUESSING what salaries are.
