hey, its been a long time. i shopuldn't have left you ( shout out to ra for that quote) but it has been a hectic summer thus far. but i still find the time to visit but haven't posted in months until now. the summer is usually a slow time with topics so i usually along with other people bring up topics of opinion and perception like favorite knick player, best knick villian and so on. since we have many new posters i would like to get an opinion form them to on this topic. for years, new york has had a decent history of great guards. even though there was a stretch where point guard play was shaky at best circa 97-99, there are many noteworhty point guards. now i started watching the knicks around '89 or so so my list could be different from those who were fans through the 80's or 70's like old fan or marv. but here is myu list of best knicks point guards:

5.) doc rivers- he did not have blazing speed and was strictly half court when we got him but he was a floor general in every sense of the word. he commands respect and was so knowledgeable of the game. he used every factor to gain an advantage whether it is to flop or smoth over a ref, rivers knew what he was doing. he was also a god defender who, despite his lack of speed, kept in front of most opponents.

4.) derek harper- the only viable replacement for someone like doc rivers except it thought it was an upgrade. labeled the best player ever to not be in a all- star game, harper was a great leader who knew what to do in key situations. if he needed to distributr the ball, he would. if he needed to score, he would. unlike rivers, he could adapt and change with any style of play by running the break or play half court. definately a coach player who adjusted well when he came to new york. would have been the finals mvp in '94 had we had won it. limited by age and lack of athleticism.

3.) rod strickland- the one point guard who , if we had kept him, could have given us a championship. arguably the best pure point guard on the list because he can do it all fairly well whether it is scoring, distributing and defending. amazing handle and quickness, he could knife in the lane with blinding speed. knew how to run the break and half court offense effectively. unfortunately, he was a hot head who turned off his teammates as well as his coaches. his desire and interest on the court is alarmingly passive most of the time. if he was as passionate as the other guys on the list, he would have been the best point guard not only in a knicks uniform but one of the best ever.

2.) stephon marbury- could and should move up on the list. most physically gifted of all the point guards on this list and has the potential for greatness. could happen under brown's helm. a strong and quick point guard who can penetrate at will. very good distributor who can get better with patience and awareness. best scorer of all of the point guards on the list. defense is a major issue as well as leadership abilities. can get easily frustrated with teammates but at least he shows he cares unlike strickland.

1.) mark jackson- now i am talking about his first tenure with the knicks. he was a brilliant point guard hands down. the best court vision i have ever seen from a point guard only rivaled by magic johnson and john stockton. he can pick apart a defense with his passing and rarely makes a bad decision with the ball. above average handle who can make opponents look silly. shooting has gotten better over the years to the point that you have to guard him arond the three point area. has uncanny leadership qualities and well respected among teammates except those who feel threaten ( see vince carter). still can not defend a sapling tree but his work on the offensive end makes up for the defensive shortcomings.

my list would be
1-Harper-My favorite Knicks PG of all time...hard nosed defender, epitomized gritty PG NY Style ball, an amazing leader...
2-Marbury-Talent wise the best, his leadership skills are severly lacking, and not as good ALL AROUND as Harper...If Marbury can lead us where Derek did and round out his defense a little better, he takes top spot.
3-Jackson-I liked Jackson's passing and he became more of a leader less of a showboat later on. Still had alot of deficiencies, no jumper, was slow, not a great defender. Reminds me of a flashier John Stockton without the Jumper or the defense.
4-Rivers-Great leader and class act, but we got him later in his career. Favorite Knicks moment of ALL Time. Rivers winning a jump ball against Manute Bol (at least I think it was him....I know it was a 7 foot center though).
5-Strickland-Eh....at least he was a playground legend from NY....than again so was Jax and Steph....

there were 4 influential pg's for the knicks from '87 on...

mark jackson
doc rivers
derek harper
stephon marbury

jackson was here the longest and he performed well in all but 1 1/2 of those years. i understood why we traded him away but he was IN HIS PRIME and continued to have AMAZING years after he was gone.

doc and derek were here for the glory years. doc was the "throw-in" in that mark jackson/charles smith deal. both were great for us, but they just weren't here long enough to be a part of the team's history.

marbury just got here. he needs more years to see where he ranks in knicks history.

so from 87 to now, mark jackson is the only one that you could really say was part of knicks history, and he was only here for 5 years.

Rod Strickland was the best point guard the Knicks ever had!!!!

I still shake my head when they traded him for Mo Cheeks. That has got to be one of the dumbest moves the Knicks made ever. Strickland was a really good player. He was young and needed time to grow. Jax should have been traded!!!! Rod eventually became a 17/10 type of point guard. Geez. He would have been great to have around instead of some of these guys that were here over the years.

The Knicks had a chance to get him again but opted to sign Chris Childs. I think I literally cried about that. Rod to me is the perfect point guard. If you wanna know what a NY point guard is supposed to look like it's Rod Strickland!!!!

One guard I would like to have back under LB now is Frank Williams--I still think he has alot of good basketball ahead of him. He's still only 25.

i would agree with that. he is a better defender than marbury right now and is a student of the game. i think with patience and correct tutoring he could be a very good nba point guard. i hope he doesn't get pushed into obscurity because he is on a team with mad guards.

Yeah, what happened there? I lost track of him after he left NY, but it sounds like he didn't make much of an impression in Chicago.

Speaking of Rick Brunson does anyone remember when he went to Portland and was kinda bustin ass out there for a little while? He was putting up 20 point games and all that.
