hey, its been a long time. i shopuldn't have left you ( shout out to ra for that quote) but it has been a hectic summer thus far. but i still find the time to visit but haven't posted in months until now. the summer is usually a slow time with topics so i usually along with other people bring up topics of opinion and perception like favorite knick player, best knick villian and so on. since we have many new posters i would like to get an opinion form them to on this topic. for years, new york has had a decent history of great guards. even though there was a stretch where point guard play was shaky at best circa 97-99, there are many noteworhty point guards. now i started watching the knicks around '89 or so so my list could be different from those who were fans through the 80's or 70's like old fan or marv. but here is myu list of best knicks point guards:
5.) doc rivers- he did not have blazing speed and was strictly half court when we got him but he was a floor general in every sense of the word. he commands respect and was so knowledgeable of the game. he used every factor to gain an advantage whether it is to flop or smoth over a ref, rivers knew what he was doing. he was also a god defender who, despite his lack of speed, kept in front of most opponents.
4.) derek harper- the only viable replacement for someone like doc rivers except it thought it was an upgrade. labeled the best player ever to not be in a all- star game, harper was a great leader who knew what to do in key situations. if he needed to distributr the ball, he would. if he needed to score, he would. unlike rivers, he could adapt and change with any style of play by running the break or play half court. definately a coach player who adjusted well when he came to new york. would have been the finals mvp in '94 had we had won it. limited by age and lack of athleticism.
3.) rod strickland- the one point guard who , if we had kept him, could have given us a championship. arguably the best pure point guard on the list because he can do it all fairly well whether it is scoring, distributing and defending. amazing handle and quickness, he could knife in the lane with blinding speed. knew how to run the break and half court offense effectively. unfortunately, he was a hot head who turned off his teammates as well as his coaches. his desire and interest on the court is alarmingly passive most of the time. if he was as passionate as the other guys on the list, he would have been the best point guard not only in a knicks uniform but one of the best ever.
2.) stephon marbury- could and should move up on the list. most physically gifted of all the point guards on this list and has the potential for greatness. could happen under brown's helm. a strong and quick point guard who can penetrate at will. very good distributor who can get better with patience and awareness. best scorer of all of the point guards on the list. defense is a major issue as well as leadership abilities. can get easily frustrated with teammates but at least he shows he cares unlike strickland.
1.) mark jackson- now i am talking about his first tenure with the knicks. he was a brilliant point guard hands down. the best court vision i have ever seen from a point guard only rivaled by magic johnson and john stockton. he can pick apart a defense with his passing and rarely makes a bad decision with the ball. above average handle who can make opponents look silly. shooting has gotten better over the years to the point that you have to guard him arond the three point area. has uncanny leadership qualities and well respected among teammates except those who feel threaten ( see vince carter). still can not defend a sapling tree but his work on the offensive end makes up for the defensive shortcomings.
