Kings Sign Abdur-Rahim
12th August, 2005 - 8:27 pm

ESPN - The Sacramento Kings signed forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim on Friday, three days after a deal sending him from Portland to New Jersey fell through.

The Nets rescinded their trade with the Trail Blazers on Tuesday, claiming the nine-year veteran's right knee had failed physical exams. The Kings wasted no time reasserting their interest in Abdur-Rahim, quickly closing what's believed to be a one-year deal for the NBA's midlevel salary cap exception, worth about $5 million.

Abdur-Rahim has averaged 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in a career with Vancouver, Atlanta and Portland. The veteran forward has never reached the playoffs -- but that seems likely to change with the Kings, who added him to a starting lineup that now could be one of the NBA's strongest.

Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, moved swiftly to complete the latest move in his yearlong makeover of the franchise, which has parted ways with Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Doug Christie, Cuttino Mobley and Bobby Jackson since last summer. With Abdur-Rahim in town, Maurice Evans and Darius Songaila now are likely to leave as free agents. [READ]

Amazing that he only got one year. He must be pissed. But you can't blame Rod Thorn after the Alonzo Mourning fiasco.
We could be the Dallas Mavs of the East.

It may give him a chance to prove that the Nets' reports on his knee were spurious.

In any event, that's the kind of deal the Knicks should have given James.

I get the feeling we severely overpay players so that we attrack more players especially the mediocre ones since we can't bring in players who are actually worth the money

McDyess was already hurt, already missing over a year altogether because of his knee when we got him. SAR never missed any games due to his knee.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Seattle was offering three years to James so he wouldn't have accepted a one year offer from NY. We had to overpay to get James, yeah, but such is life when your team has no real center, hasn't had one in many years and needs to do something quickly. I would've loved for the deal to be at least a 4 year deal, but you never know how negotiations really develope. I can only hope he becomes a decent starting C, he could easily be a sold one if he put effort on it...

I hope he has a good year with them, makes the playoffs and gets extended. I certainly prefer him in Sacramento than with the Nets, so its cool. Its a better fit for him...

agree.....and we took that chance, sactown is taking that chance (you could take worse chances for 5 mil), and the nets are not.

missing games is not the issue

I think it's a smart move. Why sign multi-year @5 mil or so. Show the league that you're not damaged goods (at least as far as his knee) and reap more money afterwards.

This article makes it sound like the length of SAR's deal has not yet been determined.

Also, SAR's agent (Goodwin) claims that the Knicks tried to pull off a sign and trade to him

bonn, interesting article. how does sac doctors say they've seen worse? does this mean sar can pass a physical only on the west coast? maybe there is a future ruling on passing physicals

i can't believe sar explanation for not playing in new york is not playing his natural position......too many mo taylors? larry brown fear factor?

By playing his natural position I think he meant not having to play defense in Sacramento.

In hindsight its only 1 extra year and at 6mil or whatever he could turn out to be a bargain if he truly found his game in the playoffs last year and plays close to level. its nothing like overpaying for rose, jyd, taylor, shandon, & H20
