NBA Draft: Size matters

Although they declined to participate in the pre-draft camps, most of the top prospects in the draft did show up in Chicago on Saturday for physicals and official measurements.

The measurements are an event that teams watch with a bit of anticipation. Colleges are notorious for inflating the heights of their players and poor measurement can really hurt a player's stock.

This year Caron Butler, Kareem Rush, Dajuan Wagner and Jay Williams all measured shorter than listed. Jared Jefferies actually measured an inch taller.

Wingspans are a big deal in the pros when measuring a prospects' defensive potential. Jason Jennings had the longest wingspan at 7-foot-7. Nene Hilario and Melvin Ely both had 7-foot-4 wingspans, which should really help their cause. A few players, like Mike Dunleavy, Yao Ming, Qyntel Woods and Williams have pretty short arms relative to their size.

Here are how the top prospects measured out on Saturday. All heights are with shoes (in most cases an inch and half taller than without shoes).

Carlos Boozer: 6' 9 1/4" | 258 lbs | 7' 2 1/4" wingspan
Curtis Borchard: 7' 1/4" | 238 lbs | 7' 2 1/2" wingspan
Caron Butler: 6' 6 1/2" | 222 lbs | 6' 11 1/2" wingspan
Mike Dunleavy: 6' 9 1/2" | 230 lbs | 6' 9" wingspan
Melvin Ely: 6' 10 | 240 lbs | 7' 4" wingspan
Drew Gooden: 6' 10" | 227 lbs | 7' 1/2" wingspan
Rod Grizzard: 6' 7 3/4" | 193 lbs | 7' wingspan
Marcus Haislip: 6' 9 3/4" | 221 lbs | 7' wingspan
Nene Hilario: 6' 10 3/4" | 253 lbs | 7' 4 1/2" wingspan
Jared Jeffries: 6' 11" | 230 lbs | 7' 1/2" wingspan
Jason Jennings: 7' 1/2" | 249 lbs | 7' 7" wingspan
Yao Ming: 7' 6 1/4" | 296 lbs | 7'4 3/4" wingspan
Kareem Rush: 6' 5 3/4" | 199 lbs | 6' 9 3/4" wingspan
Amare Stoudemire: 6' 10" | 233 lbs | 7' 1 3/4" wingspan
Dajuan Wagner: 6' 2" | 193 lbs | 6' 8 1/2" wingspan
Chris Wilcox: 6' 9 1/2" | 218 lbs | 7' 1" wingspan
Frank Williams: 6' 2 3/4" | 212 lbs | 6' 8" wingspan
Jay Williams: 6' 1 3/4" | 197 lbs | 6' 3 1/2" wingspan
Qyntel Woods: 6' 8 1/2" | 213 lbs | 6' 10" wingspan

it'd be nice if we could snag the 4th pick from memphis for spree if West wants Jones so much, Spree would fit also. Without giving up our #7 pick. Maybe deal Houston to Chitown for the #2? I know it's improbable, but could happen. Houston + #7 to Chitown for #2 + Marcus Fizer + Junk. Or # 5 pick, we send Denver Spree and keep our #7 pick. or Send Houston to cleveland for the #6, get/take back Mihm+bigZ (who we trade to Dallas/portland)+Person. We can trade Thomas for the #8 and maybe also 12th pick(s) from Clips, because they need help up front, and thomas is solid at the Center spot and insurance in case Olowokandi bails.

That list of size, wingspan etc... is really helpful. I was surprised with how some players turned out. Wilcox weighing just 218 was surprising and also him being over an inch shorter than Nene really makes me like Hilario more. Jason Jennings having that big of a wingspan is pretty incredible too and if he were to drop to us in the second round, which he probably wouldn't, he would be a steal. His chicago camp wasn't impressive, but his size and wingspan is. I think Nene sounds like our guy right now.

Actually the big surprises to me are Frank Williams, Dajaun and Rod Grizzard. All good wingspan for their length. Makes me hope on another first rounder all the more.

we could probably trade othella for a late first round pick... PHX at 22 might take Othella and our 2nd rounder for their 1st rounder.

I remember Phoenix having some interest in Othella last season. That would be a legit deal and something they might consider. With that pick we could get Dickau, Jennings, Grizzard, or Sampson. Also, i don't know this for sure, but i heard Jamal Sampson measured in at nearly 7-foot compared to the 6-10 1/2 or 6-11 most thought he was. That will likely raise his stock maybe enough to get him into the first round.

continued notes from nbadraft.net

Notes:

NBA players listed heights are measured with their shoes on.

Condors (Large Wing Spans)

Jason Jennings checked in with the longest wingspan at 7-7.

Frederick Jones is 6-3 1/2 with a 6-11 wingspan. 8 1/2 inches between his without shoe height and his wingspan.

Dajuan Wagner has a whopping 6-8 1/2 wingspan. almost 8 inches more than his height without shoes, and 5 inches more than similar sized Jay Williams.

Elvin Mims is 6-5 1/2 with a 7-1 1/2 wingspan.

Smush Parker is 6-4 with a 6-10 wingspan.

Rolan Roberts is 6-6 3/4 with a 7-1 wingspan.

Lenny Cooke is 6-6 1/2 with a 7-1 wingspan.

George Williams is 6-6 3/4 with a 7-0 1/2 wingspan

Vincent Yarbrough is 6-7 with a 7-0 1/2 wingspan.

Lubos Barton is 6-7 3/4 with a 7-0 wingspan. Same for Rod Grizzard.

Uche Okafor is 6-10 with a 7-5 1/4 wingspan.

T-rex's (No arms)

Players who have shorter wingspans than their heights with shoes:

Lynn Greer who is 6-1 1/2 with a 6-1 wingspan.

Yao Ming, with a 7-4 3/4 wingspan is the only player taller than his wingspan without shoes.

JR Bremer has the same height with shoes as his wingspan, 6-2 1/4.

Stretch Shoes

Rod Grizzard and Luke Recker each added the greatest amount to their respective heights at 1 3/4 inches.

Errors

Possible errors with the measurements:

Chris Christofferson checked in with a 9-11 standing reach which can't be possible. Yao Ming has both more height and greater wingspan and only standing reaches 9-7. Therefore unless Ming's neck is 5 inches longer than Christofferson, the measurements are wrong. Chris Christofferson's reach is not likely this high.

Jason Jennings and Jared Jeffries have just a two inch standing reach differential. Jason Jennings probably has a higher standing reach than listed.
