I was thinking about the salary cap, and what IT was going to do i.e. try to get under it, work around it etc. and I decided to go check how many non-minimum contracts the Knicks have allowed to expire recently.

The answer? none. zip. zero. nil. nada.

I mean sure there was Dermarr, Travis Knight, postell, even whatsizname on the Bobcats(edit: Lee Nailon). But those are 2-3 mpg guys. Im talking real contracts here, and the Knicks havnt let a single one expire since at least 1997.

I think this means that TT and Penny (this year) and Mo-T next year are going to be bringing in new players. Not sure if thats good or not, but I for one dont give a crap about getting under the cap. Lets be honest, If Lebron REALLY wants to come here, he'll get here somehow.

All bets are off, this time things are different.

Isiah had to increaase payroll to get some respectable players.

The hype about players not being tradable and what a hero Isiah is might be a bit bloated because I don't think most people would have dreamed the knicks would have increased the payroll, or in otherwords commitmore capital to improve the roster!

It was a good theory Isiah tried but was flawed by the Gazy factor. IN that, we got better players than what we had, but they were players whom teams wanted to dump for the obvious reasons discussed many times before.

BUt, if your over the cap, those contracts are the only way to upgrade until you can get below it. We are two years form being below the cap.

This is not Atlanta, nor Krause's bulls, this is NYC, and say what you want, dolan is commited to spending and this is a desired location!

I've been saying that for a long time. It just couldn't be more obvious that The Knicks are not interested in letting expiring contracts expire and would rather get good players (plus bad contracts) instead.

The problem is that it hasn't worked so far and hopefully the team is changing directions. I'm sure if Larry were 4 weeks ago, there's no chance we sign James long term, and maybe we do have that Dalembert for Marbury trade come true. However, that's in the past. If you're gonna trade the BIG expiring contracts, try your ass off not to get excess baggage, b/c otherwise, it might not be worth it.

hasn't worked so far? You know that you can't judge that after 1 1/2 seasons with a GM. It has worked at improving the talent and youth on the roster, though.

Have we had a winning season since 2000?

unless we start letting guys expire, we will have a roster of 20 guaranteed deals with our rookies benched for every mistake they make. i don't care what our salary total reads, but we CAN NOT trade, say, penny for a good player and contract filler. we already have 16 players including jackie and jerome. the roster is limited to 15. there is no way we can keep doing 2 or 3 for 1 trades, and those are the only ones we can do with the bloated contracts we're trying to move. eventually we have to cut our losses and let guys walk. like shandon anderson.

but Zeke is rebuilding new york style in unconvential ways its ok to keep taking on overpaid mediocre players who stun the developement of the younger players with more upside. I swear we better not trade the expiring contracts for the sake of making a trade. It better make sense like if not for a quality bigman then something like TT for Grant Hill who's contract expires after 2006/07 with H20 and Taylor and with Larry, Marbury, Hill, Crawford, Q we'll be a lot closer to a win now team and right up there with the best in the East.

Thanks. all Isiah has done is talk about these expiring contracts. No way will he just let them expire. He's going to use them. Lets just hope he uses them wisely and not for someone like steve francis because he's a young, athletic combo guard who would fit right into a rotation of Marbury, crawford, nate & Q because he's young and athletic oh and he's a basketball player.

Don't add anyone who will not solve our problems is maxed out til 2009-2011

Has Isiah been the GM since 2000? You need a smart GM managing expiring contracts (and all trade assets). Please don't cite anything that happened under Layden as relevant to the determination of whether trading expiring contracts can help the team. I never said an idiot GM would make good trades using expiring contracts.

Shandon Anderson is actually the perfect example of why it's okay to do a 2 for 1 trade when you have 15 full roster spots. You can buy out any contract at any time. (No one let him "walk")
