First of all a thanks to DJ for having me tag along. It was very cool. I met Marv previously, so it was great to catch up with him. Equally good to meet Killa, Hardcore, Wood and of course DJ. Great Knick fans & cool cats to the last. Hopefully we meet up again for opening night.
Alot was discussed, and those guys can help me fill in the blanks but here was the gist:
Isiah was a bit of a polition, as to be expected.
Asked what 2 postitions need the most attention he said all of them. Until you win a title you look to improve in every area
There was a guy really dogging Steph. He basicly said Marbury was selfish and why did all his teams get better when he left. Isiah said what most of us have, that those teams got 2-3 players back and got stronger in other areas. The highlight was when the guy said "I saw Marbury scowl at Tim Thomas during a game" and everyone started laughing and saying "We all scowl at Tim Thomas." ISiah also talked about when he played and how he would get on guys during a game and give them crap, and how more people said they didnt like playing with him than they did. Winning was the bottom line (and it still is)
On the backcourt and Marbury playing 2: he also talked about his playing days. When he had some of his monster scoring games, including the playoff game when he scored 40 on a bad ankle he was playing off the ball and Vinnie was playing point. He said it doesnt matter who does what, so long as they are doing what they are good at.
On Andrew Bynum: He said drafting a HS player in this market would not have been a problem, and they had Bynum very high on the radar. He said they tried very hard to get an extra pick, but the Lakers were locked in there and wouldnt budge. He said he just thought Frye was a better fit and only had Bogut ranked higher.
On Jackie Butler: said he thought he had a ways to go but would be a good pro. Didnt say if he would be on the roster or NBDL or whatever.
On Sweetney he said that if he played football he would be a monster, but he since he plays BB his body is a big concern. He said he loved MS, loved his hard work ethic and wasnt overly concerned about him losing weight. Said his job is to by physical under the basket and being heavy wasnt a bad thing for MS's role and what they wanted & needed from him.
Said Nate and David Lee will be impact players and could help right away.
Said they wanted to be fast and were looking for smart players that could play the whole court and were versatile.
Said NY is too hard on Marbury, and didnt really understand why a home town guy was so criticized.
Couldnt reveal his "plan" as they have 29 enemies that will keep them from achieving it. He did say he confided in Mills, the Knick brass and Bonn3-PO what that plan was.
Didnt say rebuild or retool, just that they were commited to fielding a good team while laying the foundation for a great future and using the draft.
I'm sure there's more....
funniest thing for me? DJ is known by all these MSG guys like he's a made man or something. One guy goes "hey Su.. no salary cap questions this time." Pretty funny
