On pti todAY, KORNHEISER Said thAT EVEN WITH Larry brown, the knicks won't mAKE THE PLayoffs. wilbon didn't reALLY EVEN CONTEND THat. the Way it looks now, we'd be fighting for spots 6-8, with 1-5 pretty much locked up. AT THIS POINT, I DO THINK WE Have A LEGIT chANCE at crACKIN THOSE Last 2 spots, but there hAVE BEEN CONFLICTING OPINIONS FROM Many of the espn AFICIONAdos. sAS SEEMS TO THINK THE KNICKS Have A GOOD CHance of ATLEast getting to the 1st round, but he sAID THEY PROBably won't get pAST THat. meANWHILE, KORNHEISER sAID TODay, AFTER a week-long vACation (the show sucked without him), thAT THE KNICKS WON'T. and it's b/c of thAT Nagging doubt thAT YOU GUYS KEEPING HEaring me bitch AND COMPLain ABOUT THE Lack of A DEFENSIVE, IMPact big mAN, AND HOW WE NEED TO GO OUT THERE and obtAIN ONE. SO WHat's the concensus?

DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

i think the consensus is that YOU NEED TO GET A NEW F'N KEYBOARD!!!

but other than that - i think our frontcourt will all average somewhere between 20-25 mins a piece. if LB is the coach, i think we'll make the playoffs b/c despite our lack of individual defensive players, we STILL have talent on the team and should be good enough to win 42 games.

last year they were bold, this year they're cautious after getting humiliated by our second half collapse
it'll take time for them to regain trust in us after last season

six months ago nearly everyone was convinced this team couldn't make the playoffs any time soon. Gradually many people have changed their views and will continue to

we could make the playoffs between 6-8 or we could be all the way back in the 11-12 area. we didnt add an elite player to a club that has only a fringe one. our power is in our depth and potential right now. for example i dont detoir has to wonder what they are getting out of ben wallace, but we SURe will wonder what big game will give us.

we have the potential o a crawford and Sweetney playing like the last few weeks, but will they?

is fyre a 4 or 5?

q rich, nothing special there decent ball player, i dont know if he will even be a fit here with larry brown. if you look at the way he handles guards, Q-rich is the complete polar opposite, atleast crawford can handle and playmake and has the ability to creat. Q-rich is a chucker and a post up player who is very thin on the D. hes a walker from the guard slot.

our main hope relies in Crawford Sweetney Frye and Nate> I pretty much know what im getting with Marbury, but I think the 4 players above hold keys for us

Tim Thomas=contract year, so who knows--there are a lot of question marks all over the place, MAINLY on the D.

I feel its possible we can put everything together and have a run at the half way mark to 43 wins or so, but I understand where people can say we wont make it. We dont have players like Dwight Howard, Lebron James and those are teams that didnt make it last year, and those teasm should be improved, especially Clev. Boston is falling while NJ rises--philly unkown, not much difference from us. was lost hughes but added daniels butler atkins and thats not bad.

Are you going to the Bobs3304 school of typing Briggs? (I couldn't resist.)
is fyre a 4 or 5?
Someone else pointed out that there are really only 2 or 3 fives in the league. The rest of the centers are all 4s. This is really a non-issue.

I think you're underestimating Q's defense. He looks about average on defense whenever I watch. I don't think Larry is stuck on using guards the exact same way he did in Detroit. When you have a nice player like Q who has a lot to offer, any good coach will find a way to fit him into his plans. Isiah's been pursuing Brown all summer. I don't think he would have acquired Q if he thought Larry would have a problem with how he plays.

Brigss has been underestimating Q from the jump. That's nothing new.

As for players who are not known for defense, Larry Brown has coach a whole bunch of players who ranged from bad D to terrible D.....Mark Jackson comes to mind. Brown is the type to impliment a system that really can protect a player or two here and there. I think the best all around players will play the most. The only person who will play reguardless is Steph I believe and I also feel that Steph is going to become a better defender and decision maker under Brown. Any player who is willing to buy into the system will be solid on D...especially from the team stand point. People forget that the year that the Knicks set the record for holding teams under 100 points in consecutive games, Allan Houston was on that team. Larry Brown will make us a better defensive unit.

Will we be among the best defensive teams in the league? No but we will be much better at that end. Q Rich and the whole 9.

All I disagree on is saying Q's a chucker. That was his role in Phoenix, but everytime I think about playing Q in NY, I think about him posting up. That's his game, one of the few reasons he was happy to come to NY was so he could play his own game.

Last year we looked good on paper, but our chemistry was god awful!

IT was toxic! Preseason told a lot about the team. It was inconsistant, then by the end of december it just consistantly worse!

I would not even begin to predict any outcome.

Given the youth movement, and hopefully these guys earn the minutes, then Its possible we could be one of those slow to start, but get better thru the season teams.

Today I would have to say we are NOT a playoff team. But thats not what I want to happen!

I think we looked good on paper last year because people, including me, thought Jamal and TT would play a lot better than they did. Even if you take a pessimistic assessment and assume those two will repeat last year's performances, the team won't rely on them nearly as much with Q. I also assume TT will at least return to his 14/5 #s if he starts now that the family experiences are more than a year away and he's in a contract year.

Q-Rich is a decent ballplayer. It's not me underestimating him, its people over rating him. Three years in a row >40% shooting poor defense etc.. and let me REMIND you that a SMARTER organization let him go rather quickly after winning 62 games, and was willing to throw in the 21st pick to do it. Were kind of lucky in a way because that pick was post marked for julius hodge, and by luck he was taken one step before nate.

I think we have too many players. A lot of guys have different skills but most arent outstanding. We have a lot of average players. Ariza, JYD, Rose, TT, Mo T, JJ, Crawford, Q, Sweetney all do some good things, but Marbury is the only real impact guy I see on a night to night basis. The rest are pretty average. Now we are MUCH younger, and with good coaching can get closer to a style of play that will translate into more wins and guys playing better.

We had a good offseason so far, but I think we are still one more away from making the playoffs for the reasons mentioned. I think we can get in, but I have to see something to convince me before I start to guzzle the kool-aid. I'm excited about the season, and I think we have some players on the team that can and will be a part of something better in the future. Thats worth watching and its something we didnt have in recent 30+ win seasons.

Before the trade deadline we will find out who our second star player will be. I am guessing that it will be between Frye and Q.

He didn't do well in Vegas SL, but in the Minn SL Frye showed he has skills to contribute to this team. Shooting 60% from the field is hot no matter what league you play in. Marbury will get this kid easy shots and won't have to take many to be effective. Plus he's an excellent FT shooter. I don't know what this team is going to look like opening night, but I expect good things this season.

Today on PTI, Kornheiser said that with Larry Brown the Knicks will win 50 to 55 games next year. I guess he changed his mind about the Knicks making the playoffs.
