With the recent announcement that Larry Brown is expected to be bought out, the most important week of Isiah's Knick career is ahead of him. There is no margin for error, Isiah has to move on getting Larry Brown to keep his momentous off-season going. He has worked wonders with the draft, has strengthened the Knicks weak frontcourt with the key free agent signing of Jerome James, and now is the time to perform the coup de gras and hire Larry Brown. Even if it takes a 100 million dollars (ok that might be overstating it) to sign this guy for four years, Isiah you've gotta' take this one away quickly. Don't even let Larry Brown get time to breathe, put the pen in his hand and give him whatever he wants.
Note to Isiah: Remember how you made a career loser your franchise player? Remember how everyone said that Jamal Crawford hasn't met a shot he didn't like? Worried about your team's defensive intensity or offensive execution? Solution to the problem: Larry Brown. Brown has the penchant to transform career losers and ball hogs into brave hearted warriors like Allen Iverson and Chauncey Billups. While Allen Iverson is a ball hog and Billups is still very inconsistent, they both know when to turn their skills and deficiencies into winning. They weren't saying that about either before they had been coached by Larry Brown. Selfishness turned into passion for Iverson and unlikely shot became an unlikely winner for Billups. No challenge or persona is too daunting for Brown, so anything is possible with Larry Brown. Maybe that means Marbury can finally get past the all star break with a winning record, or maybe he waves bye to Knicks from Toronto, Philly, or Minnesota and sees another team vastly improve without him.
While every New York media member has stated that Larry Brown would be retained by the Pistons, were there signs pointing otherwise? Isn't it fishy that Bill Laimbeer (whom HOOPSWORLD had stated would be the favorite to be hired by the Knicks if Brown bowed out) resigned himself out of the race as soon as the Pistons and Brown started talking? Suspicious how even though Larry Brown was supposedly returning to Detroit according to his agent Joe Glass (who has to say the politically correct things), the Knicks made no scheduled moves to announce the promotion of Herb Williams. While this doesn't mean that Larry Brown is coming to NY definitely (he still has health issues and a family), there was something in play for at least a month that would suggest otherwise.
In either case, Isiah can have a full force redemption in New York if he brings Larry Brown. Isiah has to take a page from the Ernie Grunfeld days, and make this Hall of Famer coach feel wanted. Have billboards and bus advertisements with his pictures in it, launch fireworks when he flies into New York, take him and his family to the best locales of New York, sell him the fact that he's only one hour away from Philly (his off-season residence) by Train; do whatever it takes. This is your crowning moment Isiah, don't let this slip out of your hands.
