The Detroit Pistons and Larry Brown are parting ways, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

The Pistons and Brown, sources said, moved closer Monday to a buyout of Brown's contract, which has three years left at $18 million.

It was not immediately known if the buyout arrangement would be finalized Monday, and it remains to be seen whether Brown -- plagued by serious bladder complications throughout much of last season after hip surgery -- intends to take some time away from coaching. He could pursue a coaching job with the New York Knicks or a front-office job with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ex-Minnesota coach Flip Saunders is the leading candidate to replace Brown in Detroit after the Pistons came within one victory of winning back-to-back titles under the 64-year-old Brown.

i'm guessing he "takes a year off" <cough>part of buyout, can't coach the knicks next season<cough> and becomes our coach next season.

in the interim - herb will get a two year deal with a club option for a third and will either be top assistant or let go after the season.

If he becomes free, I would hire Brown anyway. 50% of Brown is better than 100% of Herb.

Yea big deal. Brown comes here stays 2 years and starts his same BS with Knicks that he's done with every other team he's been on.

Yep. I can see that. He likes Herb alot per reports. I think Westphal should be retained though. His input into the Knicks system will be greatly needed.

our youngsters would benefit greatly from 2 of their first years in the league under LB. They'd learn to play as a team and D from the beginning of their careers. If he leaves afterwards, we still win.

I am more willing to go with Brown than any other coach in the league right about now. Larry is the superstar that we need.

I know Larry Brownbag's act is horrible. But I will say this every team he left he either took them as far as possible. And to be fair to the guy he stayed in Philly and Indiana pretty long. Longer than JVG did with the Knicks and I don't hear anyone jumping on him. I don't know what his problem is with Detroit but he has improved his nomad track record in Indiana and Philly.

Except for Riles, yes. I think he's better than Phil.

brown coming here AFTER this season makes ALOT more sense.

i'm assuming isiah is going to make 2 more mega deals - one for penny, and one for tim.

and that leaves him with mo and jyd to play with in deals NEXT summer so brown COULD, i repeat, COULD, be coming into a situation where this team could seriously challenge for something...for what i have no clue but y'all smell what i'm cookin'

Let's not get our hopes up...Brown to the Knicks is what I have been praying for.

this is a great opportunity, but I agree that we should not assume he will be the coach of the Knicks next year. His buyout only means that the probability of this occuring is a little higher. Even if we got him, he would abandon us within a few years. That, or it would be a disaster due to his inability to develop young players properly. And as it is, our roster is full of them. I could foresee conflicts with Isiah if he ever became coach of the Knicks.

getting Larry Brown would salvage Isiah's offseason in my eyes...that's the only way i can fathom this team making any real noise next season...otherwise we'll see more of what we saw last season, just w/some different faces on the court...just my opinion.

Signing him after the buyout wouldn't cost us anything, right?

someone mentioned to me that chances are, this was already known a while ago.

possible signs:

1. marbury trade rumors were leaked.
2. we held out for a LONG time letting MANY other coaches go (like nate, etc.)
3. laimbeer pulling out

so we'll see how it shakes out...

ESPN radio reports that the Knicks have a standing offer of 5 years $50 million dollars for Larry Brown to become the new head coach...no word yet as to what LB's plans are (whether he'll sit out the year, take over as CLE's president, or take the Knicks' coaching job after DET buys out his contract)

i'll say this, if Isiah manages to get LB signed as the new Knicks head coach, his offseason will be a success in my eyes (even though i disagreed w/the JJ signing)

There has to be a clause in the buyout that prevents Larry from coaching the Knicks this season (or even coaching period) so that they save face. I really doubt Detroit would let him coach us this season though I knew Larry wouldn't be back there next season. We won't have that bad of a shot at him next season though. Our roster may be more appealing by then as dj mentioned.

"This is a very cautious situation that we're in. You have to be conservative in terms of using your assets and using them wisely. We're building for the future." - Zeke (I guess not protecting a first round pick is being conservative)
