following DE live feed--David lee has been awesome[im going to start eating crow on him sometime] but here is the big news they have let Channing frye play through all fouls--get this he had 4 fouls in the first two minutes and finished up the first half with NINE fouls 6 points 5 reb. I guess they took the advice to let him play but this is outrageous and scary. I mean this guy is starting to look like a real bust.

Jonathan Givony - President
Eric Weiss
July 11, 2005

New York Knicks- New Jersey Nets

Halftime Score: New York Knicks- New Jersey Nets

Knicks

Jonathan Givony

David Lee- The Knicks are playing Lee at the small forward position, probably because they have so many quality big guys on their roster. He was being extremely aggressive right from the get go, taking the ball strong to the basket off the dribble as he’s been doing all along in the summer league so far, getting to the line again and again and knocking down his free throws. He showed great body control to spin off his man and score with either his left or his right hand, or keep his composure and kind the open man with one of his trademark passes even when he’s on the move. In the first half he finished with 13 points on 3-4 shooting from the field and 7-8 from the line.

Channing Frye- Seemed to be hell bent on proving that he’s not soft once again, picking up 4 fouls in the first two minutes. He was more effective in the first half than he’s been all summer league, making strong moves and showing nice footwork in the paint before finishing with a jump hook. Frye also did a nice job cleaning up the glass. He picked up his 7th foul with 5:47 left to go in the 2nd quarter, meaning that the other team got a technical foul shot from that point on every time he committed a foul. He finished the half with an unbelievable 9 fouls in 18 minutes to compliment his 6 points and 5 rebounds.

Nate Robinson- Nate started right where he left off, pushing the temp, getting everyone involved and still finding some time to score points by himself. He had no problem playing off the ball either, coming off a strong curl to knock down the three pointer. He got to the basket again and again, picking up fouls and points all along the way. Nate is definitely the most exciting player to watch here in Las Vegas, and the crowd loves him for it. When he started getting into it with Sharrod Ford and got T’d up in the process, who do you think the fans here sided with?

Trevor Ariza- The garbage man, Ariza is perfectly content picking up the scraps and doing the little things for his team as the 4th or 5th option. His skill set is very limited at this point, but he is effective at finishing around the hoop, getting in the passing lane, rebounding and rotating for help defense thanks to his length, size and athletic ability.

jeez briggs - it's WAY too early to be calling anybody a bust.

if you're willing to take kwame, after he showed flashes AT THE END OF HIS SECOND YEAR, then don't start giving up on frye already.

He was more effective in the first half than he’s been all summer league, making strong moves and showing nice footwork in the paint before finishing with a jump hook. Frye also did a nice job cleaning up the glass.

he actually got props from the writer even tho his #'s aren't that great.

from what I've seen (first 2 SL games), Frye seems too tentative at times, as if he's overthinking it. He needs to loosen up, and go on adrenaline like Lee and Nate.

I think there are certain things that Aguirre can work on, like footwork, conditioning, and positioning, but he really needs to be able to go all out and try to assert himself better. He has poise, and yet he musters up foul after foul.

I think he's trying to be OVER-physical. He's not letting the game come to him. That's not a problem yet, but if he doesn't show atleast some improvement, it will then become a reason to worry...
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

You have to admit, 9 fouls in the first half is just plain comical. He is pressing way too much.

Sorry for using the word bust, but when i read that he picked up 9 fouls against NJ in the first half who has NO ONE good in the paint, that is a little scary. I thought that he should play through fouls, but this is obscene. Of course you are going to have some stats when you can be as aggresive as you want to be, but I was thinking maybe he dpick up 7-8 fouls for the hole game--i mean wtf is he doing to pick up 9 FOULS IN A HALF? Sorry, dont want to sugar coat it with channing, he hasnt been good. I keep waiting for signs and will continue to wait. this should be a one time deal--if he plays defense abnd fouls this much, then he IS better off sitting. thats not real basketball. that carte blanche to play undiscplined.

you're 100% right that he hasn't been good.

but i'm not surprised. i didn't think he was going to be right away. he wasn't athletic enough nor strong enough to adjust right away so it will take time with him. i'm not going nuts on isiah b/c frye may only average 10-15 mins a game this season. i'm willing to wait on him.

he could be VERY nervous and pressing big time. maybe he needs the rest of the summer to get more comfortable. we never know how people will adjust to the nba and it's obvious that he's having problems. so let's see where we are in november, and then again at the break, and then at the end of the year. let's just HOPE we see some growth.

damn, sweets looked like a deer in headlights his first few months here. absolutely LOST. but look at him the end of that rookie season when he got comfortable.

we need to wait on him - longer that many expected, but we need to wait.

Okay guys, lets get predictions on how many fouls Frye finishes with.

I'll say 13.

Yeah, he needs to settle down. It's going to all depend on his desire to understand the game at this level and eventually on a higher level. We all know that Sweetney's desire has been suspect. His game picked up but if he was 100% dedicated he would take his body more seriously in the process. There's no reason to believe that Frye doesn't have the desire. What I did pick up on is that when he had a subpar showing he came back with a lot of emotion and fire. It's now all about channeling that the right way. So like I originally said in another post, let's see how he finishes out the summer league and see how he works with Aguire during this offseason. I'll be expecting to hear that he is improving by leaps and bounds on his rebound positioning, game timing and defensive position. Based on what they said, his footwork and post moves were solid and aggressive. That's great to hear. We will see what type of guts he has by the time he reports to training camp. Many players have had suspect summer league showings but went on to have good careers (see: recent post on ballers, busts and up and coming).

I expect him to play under control. Hes a 4 yr CBB player 8th pick in the draft, this is very, very poor. We cannot sugarcoat this. How can they watch him the last game against Diogu and not notice that he cant defend?

I'm not too concerned. First of all-- Jesus H. Christ, it's one summer league game! Second-- Ike Diogu had 10 PFs today in just 22 minutes. Is Ike a bust too? We don't have the minutes played stats, for all we know Channing may have played 15 or 16 of the 20 first half minutes. Chill.

the frontline this year is gonna be downright scary. some people think we'll add an allstar froncourt player for TT & Penny but I don't think its realistic. Teams don't give up on bigmen like that. We might have a shot at guys like boozer, gasol or randolph and right now I'll take them in a second!

I think that he'll continue his aggressive play in the second half and only finish with 15 fouls for the game.
This is TOO FUNNY!
But...small consolation.... at least he'll be great for "hack a shaq"
We will NEVER win with Marbury as our cameo guy.

people were expecting Frye to come in and be able to start right away. Not realistic. What we need right now is a legit, starting CENTER first, before any PF additions we make, if any.

The game is apparently over though they haven't updated the final score on draft express. They did say that Frye came up short of the triple double by 2 rebounds, but did get double figures on points and fouls (no word on how many of either).

Yeah: http://vegassummerleague.com/box_score.cfm?game=30

As an aside-- am I the only one who thinks that if it were, say, Bynum picking up an insane amount of fouls, a certain poster would not be distressed in the least? Can we at least watch Frye play a few NBA games before we start going gaga?

New York Knicks- New Jersey Nets

Final Score: Knicks 86 New Jersey 74

David Lee had a fantastic game here, even though he was playing out of position at the three spot. He got to the line relentlessly and played tough, even sometimes dirty, defense. That’s exactly what Isiah and co. are going to want him to do in New York in order to get minutes. You can tell that Lee has already developed great chemistry with his new teammates and fellow first round picks Channing Frye and Nate Robinson.

Channing completed a triple double in the fourth quarter by coming up a few rebounds in garbage time. He hit the mark in points and fouls as well to accomplish the rare summer league feat.

One respected European coach, Avner Yeor who was with Hapoel Jerusalem the past two years, came up to me in the first half and asked “how in hell did little Nate fall to 21?” When I told him that a lot of people actually thought that was a reach because of his height and the fact that he played shooting guard in college, he could only shake his head. As he correctly pointed out, Robinson is a terrific passer to compliment his fantastic basketball instincts. “He is a basketball player, period.”

He is a flashy guy, but also knows how to make the right play and get his teammates the ball exactly where they like it. Nate was definitely the best player on the floor once again today. The “statisticians” only gave him one assist, but he was a lot closer to 6-7 with all the awesome passes he made here. If Robinson wasn’t playing in this late game here, I’d be shocked if more than 50 people would have stayed. With him playing and dunking on people left and right, there were a good 300 people here or more all waiting for Robinson to do something.
