LAS VEGAS, July 9 - Herb Williams is taking steps to assemble a coaching staff, a possible indication that the Knicks will hire him as head coach and abandon their quixotic pursuit of Larry Brown.

On Saturday, Williams interviewed Paul Westphal, the head coach at Pepperdine, for a position on his staff. Williams is here running the Knicks' summer-league team; Westphal is here with other members of the Pepperdine staff to watch one of his former players.

So that's why they were talking so much during that SL game. That would be a nice addition to his staff.

Retaining Herb would be a huge mistake.

I agree... We need to bring in a defensive minded coach that will discipline his team..

One that will not take any kind of bull-sH@$ from anyone.. Laimbeer would be the best candidate for the job despite the fact he's never coach before in the NBA.. give him a shot and we'll get positive results...

Herb already failed by not playing the youngsters when the Knicks were officially eliminated from playoff contention..

He continued to play the veterans which was a huge mistake

Also, HErb has not gotten the thumps up from MArbury yet..

The more I think about it the more I want Herb and Marbury gone. I hate Marbury's piss poor attitude--he has no leadership ability, he's not going to gel personally with the positive, upbeat, media friendly rookies coming in because he's doesn't have that type of character--I don't know what kind of character he has because he never speaks--he just has that "why does everyone else suck besides me?" look on his face. He's brings down team chemistry. I hope he proves me wrong.
And the reply is...a post that makes sense (still waiting)

if Isiah and the Dolans are serious about rebuilding, and winning for that matter, they'll find a way to deal Marbury and one of our veteran PF's, if not now, then during or after this season.

Unless Marbury suddenly, miraculously changes his attitude and shows an ability to be a team-first PG, he's gotta go. When you're rebuilding, part of that involves normalizing your cap situation. If you're team payroll is on the ups of 100 Million, that doesn't constitute rebuilding.....not even close.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

and therein lies the problem. I think Isiah may be interested in rebuilding but Dolan is only interested in filling the seats and making money.

in that case, I fully expect Isiah to make more of an effort to go after legit Big Men, not long athletic secondary options like Stro and Kwame...

I think Dolan is dumb enough to be susceptible to being manipulated by Isiah.

Thanx Rich. This is a very interesting article. To tell you the truth, I'm just ready for the coaching decision to be made and move on. I see it like this, whoever coaches the Knicks may only have the first half of the season to play with. I don't think Isiah will coach the team because if that was the plan now would have been the time to do it. Larry Brown (and Flip) is the only coach(s) left on the market that is proven. Everyone else would be a crap shoot. That's why I think it has taken so long. This is a very important decision for Isiah to make. Maybe he really does believe that Herb has the potential to be a great coach but would rather go with a sure thing. Or maybe we're running out of sure things and so Herb is just as good of a candidate as the next man....so why not? Scott Skiles, Doc and Nate are doing it. But they all seem to be hard on their guys....maybe not Doc.

So after all of that rambling.....I really don't know what I'd do if I was in this position.

Nice article. The last paragraph made sense.

"The Knicks' biggest problem last season was defense, but with the slate of athletic new players, Thomas may be looking for Westphal, if hired, to be the offensive coordinator and allow Williams to handle the defense."

Damn, Westphal brings me back to the Barkley days. But that's ancient history. I saw him and Herb hangin out at the Wizards game and I was like, "What the **** are they doing together -- does Westphal actually LIKE Herb?"

And now I know the answer to that question

.....................no.

Well- you let westphal handle the offensive planning & play calling and let Herb handle the defense- I thought Eddie Jordan was the main offensive guy on the Nets when they made their runs- makes sense to me- I'd be happy.

Btw, just wanted to clarify what I think this means:

I think Isiah is set with 2 different directions to go with the team, and specifically, with the head coach. He's waited this long to open up his options, and if Larry Brown is really available, then you'll see Isiah hire him. But if Brown decides to stay with Detroit or retire, then he's wisely covering all bases by having Herb have a say in what assistants he'd like in the event that he's named head coach...

Hiring Brown = Instant Playoff Contention

Hiring Herb = Brief Rebuilding Period

That's how I see it. I think by next week, you'll see some big news. Not just rumors, I mean NEWS. The fact that Isiah has loosend up enough to give Herb an opportunity to somewhat get his foot in the door so to speak, says to me that we're nearing a fork in the road, and a decision will have to be made.

I would accept Herb if they bought in a guy like Paul. It makes sense.

Anyone remember when he was a knick? Guest on a few soap operas!

This guy just tore it up at So. Cal in his day and was on the all honkey team when he was at boston, and then later on the suns. The all honkey thing was back in the 70's some magazine used to list white players who could light it up like the black dudes of the day. It was all in fun. Paul at 6'4 could dunk often!

Typical Starphucher Knicks got him past his prime. He was in decline!
