Hawks Will Offer Joe Johnson A Max Contract
8th July, 2005 - 9:12 am
Arizona Republic - The Hawks are expected to offer restricted free agent, Joe Johnson, a maximum contract on July 22nd.

The Suns have repeatedly said they will match all offers for Johnson, but that could just be grandstanding.

If the Hawks sign J.J. to a max offer sheet, many believe they'll wind up getting him. [READ]

jeez - pheonix kind of did this to themselves. if they match - nash, jj, marion, amare - 4 MAX players - WOW.

if the hawks get him, they'll STILL have room to get Z or swift and can trade one of the josh's for a PG.

they had a chance to re-sign JJ before last season but decided to wait it out so now they are in this quagmire.

moving Q before they had jj locked up was another risky move and now they have to give him the max.

The Hawks are insane, why not draft chris paul, instead of Marvin Williams, or trade with charlotte and just draft Granger, and a big....

Jay Williams may be an alternative at the point, but JJ is not worth max money

Yeah they played with fire and they may get burnt. They'll have to match, because if they lose JJ, their team is doomed. They'll still be good, but wow, they will be a far way away from 62 games. WOW!

Hawks are stupid, they should've drafted Chris Paul and called it a day.

If JJ stays with the Suns, they might very well have an even better record than last year, they will be deeper and could win the chapionship.
But if they don't resign him, I think they are gonna go after Finley

I think this is a hell of a move by the Hawks if they really do get JJ to sign an offer sheet. They are trying to stockpile talent and they are doing a pretty good job. If they did end up getting JJ, they would have some very nice assets available for trade to get an elite big man. Its a win-win situation for the Hawks because if the Suns do match, you are basically screwing another team over and you show your fans that you are at least trying to get better. If they do sign JJ, then watch out because they will have the assets and the cap space to get a big man somehow.

What are the Hawks planning on doing w/ Joe Johnson (gotta spell it out--- JJ could also mean Jim Jackson), starting him as their PG?!

If that's what Johnson wants, then more power to him. The Suns opened up more opportunities for him to score when they traded away Q. Teaming with Amare for the better part of the next decade would be an excellent career move. If the Suns matched the offer, I say he stays.

If he wants to be the PG of the future for a team full of 6'9" athletes, more power to him too.

Career moves can be based on winniing or money. When players must choose they usually choose Money, unless its playing in some small undesirable place like Utah. Atlanta sux as a franchise but the nightlife is top-notch. Phoenix can offer more years so he may stay, but that would suck to have to max him out when i dont feel he is a max player.

If JJ is a max player than I think Duncan deserves triple the max.

Let's not be ridiculous. If any team gives JJ anything close to the max, they are clearly insane.

While we're at it, I think Sprewell is a free agent. Granted, he's almost 42 years old (kidding) and can't dunk anymore, but why not sign him for the Max too? Go Hawks!
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

JJ is worth the max as much as houston or spree were back when they got it. they may have to give it just to keep him.

they have options. Marion and NAsh are both movable down the road, and Amare has another year before max money kicks in.

Point is there's 80 players better than Joe Johnson in this league. If the Hawks want to give him max and I'm the Suns owner I say, "wow. Awesome. Enjoy Atlanta." JJ isn't better than Hughes and Hughes is getting 5 years @ $60MM.

its never what a player is worth compared to everyone in the league, its what a player is worth to one team that sets the market.

I'm sure there a couple of teams that would be willing to play Joe max or close to it, and I can see why.

Did Cle just overpay for Hughes, or did they just create the most versatile and dynamic duo of wing players in the league for the next 5 years in Lebron and Larry?

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

Every year its the same thing. There is no scale based on how a player produces, it all comes down to what one team is willing to pay for one player.

Joe J is a very good player that is getting confortable with the league. While it may be a risk by the Hawks, they are at least doing so on a young player that has the potential to be a very, very good player. And they know Phoenix will do all they can to sign him, so they lose nothing by putting the pressure on Phoenix to Max Joe J...
