they had a rotation of 10 players all playing 25 mins or so. the philosphy was to collect as much talent as possible, and then try to package them to get a star there. but it didn't work. no trades happened AND now they're losing players for nothing.

i'm not a fan of splitting time among all your players. i think you need at least 2-3 positions where a player gets 30+ mins night in and night out and for the same players to be in there at the end of the game.

Yeah, Jerry West looked depressed on Draft Nite. He couldn't really get up for Warrick even.

Yeah, there's a limit to how well a deep, talented unit can work. It worked this season for Denver, but that might blow up this year with playing time concerns. Also, Denver and Memphis were hammered in the playoffs. Look at San Antonio and the Suns and the Pistons - they play 4 or 5 starters about 40 minutes a game when it counts, and use maybe 2 or 3 bench guys for around 20 minutes a game. Riley does this too. I'm a believer in a short bench, at least in the playoffs. That's why I don't have a problem trading some of our depth at guard for a big with all-star potential.

I'm all about the Riley 8 man playoff rotation.

5 starters, 3 key bench players.

During the season, you can let 4 or 5 guys battle for the 3 key bench roles.

On our current team it breaks down like this (off the top of my head IMHO):
Marbs (duh),
Q (younger faster H20),
TT (unfortunately, he chipped in 15/game when got head right)
Sweets (sorry, he's a PF that does what a PF should do..BANG)
Frye (shot blocking center)

Bench fillers:
Craw (no brainer)
Reezy (Will be starting before we know it)
Rose (can guard shaq, heady vet)

To battle for the top 8:
Nate (so far, so good)
Lee (could help show sweets the door if he's not careful)
JYD (skinny Rose)
MoT (can post up, has just a good a chance to get in shape as sweets)

Am I forgetting anyone?

I think Memphis has done pretty well. They played great ball in the 2nd half. As for losing guys thats because Memphis has $$ problems. The Knicks have never lost a player because they couldnt afford to keep him.

The guy thats killing our roster right now is Tim Thomas IMO. I think Ariza is poised for a breakout season and can play 30 minutes a night at SF. It would also free up room at SF for Q allowing Marbury, Crawford and Nate to be on the floor together (2 of them, not all 3).

I like playing 9-10. I think guys like JYD, Rose, Lee and Nate can all play for short stretches and really give the team a boost.

you also can't leave out that you need backup in case of injury, it happens to everyone. you have to play at least 9-10 players in the regular season so even the last few guys are ready to step in if needed.

i totally agree on TT. he throws off our whole rotation just with his mere presence. if he's on our roster, he'll get 25+ minutes a night, and probably start. without him, those minutes go to ariza and whichever of our PFs are backing him up, rose, JYD, lee. i definitely want to see ariza starting next to Q and marbury by the trading deadline, the rotation fishmike was talking about would be amazing.

TT (& sweetney?) for ratliff and outlaw?

Our second unit with a 9 man rotation is incredibly fast. with Nate, Crawford, Ariza, JYD, and Frye on the floor, we would burn most every other team in transition. I would probably like ariza starting and TT off the bench because i think TT would be a really good second unit player and ariza would be at least one guy out there who could defend reasonably well. plus, tim thomas sucks.
