Players they might lose: Jermaine Jackson, Bruno Sundov

Players they might pursue: Kwame Brown (R), Antoine Walker, Stromile Swift, Jerome James, Dan Gadzuric (R)

Current cap position: $114.3 million ($64.8 million over the cap)

Analysis: The hottest rumor Thursday night was that the Knicks were targeting Brown and offering to do a sign-and-trade with Washington that would send back Michael Sweetney to the Wizards. It's clear the Knicks still need to get bigger and they also need to thin out the undersized corps of power forwards that they have.

Going after Brown makes a lot of sense for the Knicks. They need to swing for the fences and at the age of 23, Brown still has plenty of untapped potential.

The problem is that playing in New York might not be the best fit for Brown. He probably needs a smaller market with less, not more, attention. He also needs to play in an offense that gives him the ball once in a while. He played with shot-happy guards in Washington and didn't enjoy it. The Knicks may offer the best money, but if Kwame wants to resurrect his career, he should probably do it somewhere else.

Walker is another attractive option for the Knicks.

If the Knicks can't land Brown, Swift would be another good option. Put him on the floor with Channing Frye and the Knicks would be flying up and down the court again. If both guys opt for more money or different environments, James and Gadzuric are serviceable big men who could help clog up the middle.

Tim Thomas doesn't have a future in New York and will likely be traded to a team that wants his expiring contract.

The more I think about it the more I like the Kwame idea. A lineup of Kwame and Frye at PF and C would be huge, long, athletic and Kwame could play in the post with Frye playing in the high post. It would even be big enough to allow Q and Craw to start, which i think will happen too. Unless we get a starting SF in return for Tim. Sign Hunter and that's a great young nucleus that can improve from within for several years and maybe turn into a serious contender, pending Zeke and Aguire getting through to Kwame.

Marbury 6'2", Nate 5'8"
Craw 6'5", Q 6'6"
Q 6'6", Ariza 6'8", JYD 6'9"
Kwame 6'11", Lee 6'10", Mo T 6'9"
Frye 6'11", Hunter 7'0"

I would like this lineup a lot.

Well I'm not to happy about trading for Sweetney for Kwame, but I guess now that we have Frye we have our PF. I guess. But I see no reason why Kwame would all of a sudden play like he isn't a bust... I mean, it's a bigger market than Washington, more press, more of everything; why would things get better for him, if not worse?

Here is the perfect trade with Washington

Kwame and Jared Jefferies for Tim expiring contract and Malik/Mo T or Sweetney and a future draft pick...

JJ is as long as TT, but is a hustler and very athletic. He will need to be resign, but Washington may not bring him back....

Sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes. And Zeke and Aguire love reclamation projects. I don't love the Kwame idea, but it is growing on me. Kwame and Frye would be two near seven footers with complimentary games. I could really see it working.

Also, if Kwame came, I would see him as the PF and Frye as the center. Frye is going to play the 5.

You can call Kwame a bust but 2 seasons ago he was a better player (though still unerachieving) than Sweetney has ever been. If you want someone who is likely a career 6th man, keep Sweetney. If you want someone who can be an all-star and at worse will return to his 11/7 form, get Kwame.

If Sweets is indeed on his way out of NY, I gotta wish him the best of luck. He's going to be a force in the paint if he can add some more muscle and a few less daily quarter pounders.
Good luck either way Sweets, whether you're in NY or DC.

The Knicks may offer the best money...

If both guys opt for more money...

Huh? That's contradictory.

Ok, with Sweetney gone in this scenario....him being our only real back to the basket player at the moment (as he develops) someone please refresh me about Kwame's game. Is he a post up type of player or does he like to face up? My point is, we need scoring down low and no matter what anyone says I still believe that Frye will be coming off of the bench. Who will play inside? Is that Kwame's game? To me being a good post player is part work and part natural instinct. So let's say Sweets is gone.....who holds down the post? And please don't say Mo.

Just kidding. It will be QRich!! Well, I don't know. If Sweetney could get in shape, he would be a beast down low, but that has yet to happen. Now, he will be entering his third season, so it's not like he can't turn it around. It would be nice to keep him around. Unlike many of you, I think he was our best running big man. In game chape he would be perfect for us.

About the Kwame-Sweets trade, Isiah better be careful. Its true that if the trade went down it would be good for us because we immediately grow as a team, and its easier to trade a 6'11" young player than a 6'8" PF, that is if the Kwame experiment doesn't work out. But Sweetney is a great comodity to have: a great low post scorer that many find so dificult to defens (ask Curry, K-Mart for example). Gets fouled a lot and is a good FT shooter. In the right weight, he would be a great starting PF. Kwame is a mystery. A big risk that we could somehow try given the glut of PF we have (maybe Mo T was brought to bring that low post scoring since Isiah had already in mind a Sweetney trade)...

i think moving sweets for kwame may end up being a case where it's one trade too many. i can see sweets on the pistons winning a title as 6th man. i can't say that about kwame.

we want mentally tough players, we want physically tough players. sweets brings it down low. kwame has yet to show any of that. but he's only 23.

if there's anyway to get kwame WITHOUT giving up sweets - where do i sign?

if sweets is involved, it would be a painful decision process.

You guys are crying about TT being soft, but you want Kwame for Sweetney????? Some fans just don't have a clue...Kwame is equivalent to TT except that he is 1 or 2 inches taller...Yes, he is young, but toughness is not thought...Go with Hunter or Chandler...I want a player at the 5 that shows passion and emotion for the game. Kwame and TT show no passion for the game...

I would trade Sweetney for a guy like Dalembert (yeah!). I'd rather have Sweetney coming this year in great shape ready to kick some *** and signing Hunter than going by the great risk in Kwame.

the more i think about it...the more i WOULD NOT trade sweets for kwame. since we're not going anywhere significant next season, let's see if sweets can get in shape and be the big time contributor out of the post. seriously, if he turns the corner body-wise, this guy could be AWESOME for us. i think we should give him this season to see where he is.
