The 115% + $100,000 rule for trades would increase to 125% + $1 million.

That means that for teams that we are trading with, our expiring contracts are worth even more money in cap space.

So for instance, Penny's 14 million could be worth 17.5 million in cap space to a team. Do you realize what that means? It gtives us more flexibility when trying to pry away players.

Those are good news for us, and also our trading partners. I hope we start using that clause soon because we need to move some PFs!

Maybe they can just let TT and Penny expire?

I'm in no rush to trade those guys for big contracts, I don't think Isiah will be either (esp. with Jim Dolan now running MSG separately from Cablevision, meaning they'll probably have less funds to work with).

If Houston is bought out, and TT and Penny are just let to expire, the Knicks would be in the $60 million range.

If you don't count Shandon Anderson (he's still getting paid, but not on the team), it is a *GASP* reasonable $53 million.

I'd rather go that direction and have a core of 7-9 young guys than get another over-the-hill, overpriced loser like Penny Hardaway, Antonio McDyess, Glen Rice, Shandon Anderson, Howard Eisley, Luc Longley, Tim Thomas, or Vin Baker.

Great, now we can take back two terrible long term contracts in return, instead of our usual one.

Kidding. (Trying to dodge the flames now)
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Oh man! We gotta keep Houston then. If this is true he is going to be the most valuable commodity on the trade market in a couple of years. Cutting him now would just be stupid.

Penny and TT can get us good players, its just a matter of doing the right deal. But if the right deal doesn't come, then do nothing. I believe that we can get good players for them, we just have to explore every possibility carefully.

Yeah, just imagine we can trade Houston to a team that wants to be $30 mil under the cap in one season!

Yeah sure, and lets resign TT for a max veteran deal so in 4 years we can trade his expiring contract for a superstar.

Stop with the insanity alredy, "expiring contracts are not magic" lol.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

I think he was being sarcastic. But no they are not magic but they do have some value, and should be used wisely.

NEW LABOR RULE SHOULD SAFEGUARD TREVOR

By MARC BERMAN

A change in the NBA's new collective-bargaining agreement will solidify a long Knick future for acrobatic swingman Trevor Ariza.

It's unofficially called the Gilbert Arenas Rule, and prevents capped-out teams such as the Knicks from losing a gifted second-rounder through free agency.

The rule came about after Golden State could not re-sign Arenas, Cleveland could not re-sign Carlos Boozer and Detroit could not re-sign Mehmet Okur.

As a rookie, Ariza was one of the bright lights of last season's dark campaign with his high-flying dunks and putbacks, and will compete today for the Knicks in the Las Vegas summer league after gaining 10 pounds of muscle the past two months.

Ariza, selected at No. 43 in 2004, will become a free agent next summer and the Knicks don't have his "Bird Rights."

"This allows a team to keep a player it had smartly drafted in the second round," union attorney Ron Klempner said.

Under the old rules, the Knicks could not match an offer from another team if it exceeded the mid-level exception. If Ariza continues to improve, a club could have conceivably made him an offer slightly above the mid-level, knowing the Knicks could not match.

In the new CBA being drafted, teams can only sign an offer sheet with players such as Ariza that starts at the mid-level exception for the first two seasons. Bottom line: The Knicks can match.

"I think I'll be part of their future," said Ariza, who turned 20 last week. "This upcoming year we're going to bring a lot of excitement because we have a lot of athletic players."

The Knicks' 2005 draft netted three first-round picks, Channing Frye, Nate Robinson and David Lee, all on display today against Portland.

*

Team President Isiah Thomas joined the team in Vegas with cell phone in hand, concerned more about free agency than a coaching search. Kwame Brown, Stromile Swift, Jerome James, Eddy Curry, Antoine Walker, among others, are the big men he's pursued. However 7-foot-3 center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, 30, appears too old for Thomas' tastes.
