With Frye on board. I haven't heard much talk about Butler lately. Will he get a fair chance to make this team in Summer league or will he be the new Demarr Johnson?

There has to be a trade two for one or he's gone.
with the new CBA, can he go to the NDBL?

I doubt Isiah's just gonna cut him loose. I think he sees something in the kid. My money's on NBDL action, at least to start the season.

It really depends on what they do the rest of the summer. Right now it looks like there's 2 open roster spots. JB could get one of those spots. The other could be for an MLE player. There's also the possiblity that if Penny or TT are traded, that it will be a 2 for 1 or even 3 for 1 because their contracts are so big. All 3 draft picks are guaranteed contracts. There's always a chance their draft rights could be traded this summer as well. There's a lot of variables and it should make for an interesting summer. But I wouldn't consider JB a lock to return next year. If we have the roster space, of course bring him back, but assuming the draft picks dont get traded, he might be the odd man out.

Do we know if a team's NBDL players count against its 15 man roster? Does anyone have a source on this? Seems like an important point, but I haven't seen this clarified anywhere.

Actually... I think it must be the case that NBDL players don't count as part of the 15 man roster. Remember that each team can send two players down to the NBDL, but also that each team now needs to have a minimum of 14 of the 15 roster spots filled. This implies that NBDL players can't possibly count as part of the 15 man roster, unless NBDL guys count as "inactive" on the regular roster.

Demarr was cut because he sucked in the summer league.

If JB sucks, too, he will be cut.

However, I dout tha the will, he has already dominated the CBA which is arguably higher competition then a summer league (ofcourse summer leagues are all different).

He is a long term project, kinf of like picking a highschool kid. Meaning don't expect anything from him for at least another year or two.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

With all the talk about him being as good as if Zeke had acquired a first round pick, I think he will be given a chance. Either at the NBDL or at the end of the bench, Butler will probably stay. We don't know yet what he will bring to the team. From the info that was posted a couple of days ago, he looked like a good player that just went to the draft too early. That could mean that if we develope him well, he could be a great pickup...

dermarr also wasn't a particular need of ours. we had crawford on board, plus ariza and penny, and were expecting houston to return. we still need size and muscle up front. butler will get a fair shot.

31 Jerome Williams F-C 6-9 206 05/10/1973 Georgetown '96 9

There are 17 players in that list. 2 FA. Jermaine Jackson and Sundov. That makes 15 under contract.

I hope they cut Penny instead of Allan to save some money for Dolan.

Why cut Penny when his contract is an expiring one after this season? That could be a great asset come the trading deadline, maybe even now...

We have 2 huge ending contracts. It is going to be hard to use one of them let alone both. This way you can have Allan's ending contract next year and still get Dolan his savings this year.

Why do we need Jackie Butler anymore? There are 3 new "soon to be great Knicks" to get out of control over.

jackson, butler, and sundov are free agents. keeping butler will put us at 15. now i don't think we can put him in the nbdl and keep his rights, i believe it's only for rooks. IF were talking in reference to the new cba.

Guy, you used to be semi-amusing, but now you're just coming off like a moron.

What's up?

Jackie Butler may be a much better player than Sweetney...He has yet to get the playing time that he needs, so I don't know what might happen to him...We will be trading at least 3 players by start of the season, plus the release of Houston will also create another spot...There really is no need for Bruno and Germaine Jackson now that we have acquired a couple of bigs and that midget big dude...Keep on working Butler out and let him go head to head with Sweetney and all of the other PFs...If he fairs well, than we have no choice but to let either Sweetney or someone else off of the roster...Look, Lenny's biggest mistake was his unwillingness to try different things or use a different lineup...As bad as we were last year, we can't afford not to experiment...

I think the rule is that you can send a player to the NBDL if he has 2 years of experience or less. Jackie has only 1 year so he is a prime candidate. However, since he is a free agent, he may play in the summer league, assess his chances, and sign somewhere else if he believes he has the ability to make another team's active roster.

That depends on what the league calls a "veteran". I don't know exactly about that, but I think its true that since Butler has only one year of experience (and thats a reach, because he had like 5 minutes all the "year"), he can be a candidate for the NBDL.

Jackie Butler is terrible anyone who thinks this guy is worth a roster spot is a complete ass, he is undersized doesn't do anything vertical and isn't in great shape.....

I would rather sign Deng Gi out of Fairfield, he is thick, blocks anything in site, and can jump and would be a perfect fit to play some minutes with Frye and help this defensively challenged group
