Let me use Bynum as an example.

Let's say that the Knicks draft Bynum with the 8th pick. He's got huge potential but everyone knows that he could use a yr or two playing for Calhoun at UConn.

I know that Bynum can choose to go to UConn even after being selected by the Knicks, and that the Knicks will hold the rights to him for a couple of yrs (which, I think, might be a better option for his development than to be playing for NBDL or on the Knicks bench).

Now, my question is, could the Knicks support Bynum financially at all while he's at college? What happens if he sustains a major career-ending injury during his days at UConn? Could the Knicks arrange for some sort of financial safety net for him? I mean I'm sure his people (brother) wants the $$$.

I heard that there's only been one player who actually went to college after being drafted, so it's a rare thing to happen.

If you turn pro dont you lose your amatuer status and youre not allowed to play NCAA collegiate sports?

I think a while back the celtics actually drafted bird his junior year but he went back to school and joined them after he graduated. I think thats what happen, but that was a different era.
